Redcar: 1 Charles Wright, 2 Jake Mulford, 3 Jason Edwards, 4 Danny King, 5 Dan Gilkes (Guest). 6 Tom Spencer, 7 Ace Pijper.   Diamonds Select: 1 Steve Worrall, 2 Ben Barker, 3 Simon Lambert, 4 Connor Mountain, 5 Lewis Kerr, 6 Danny Phillips, 7 Alfie Bowtell.

Thanks to the Redcar promotion for putting this on again.  Looks like the weather is going to "play ball" this time!! Hopefully we will see some great speedway and all come through the meeting "unscathed".

Is there any objective in having this meeting other than a run out for Redcar and to make a few quid? It's strange that there's been very little made of getting Newcastle back. No fan get togethers, no fundraising, no keeping the name alive. Just silence.

It's never going to come back to Brough Park obviously, but is anyone doing anything to try other options? The long-term people all seem to have happily moved on to different tracks too.

Decent line-up tonight anyway. Mostly riders who did well for Newcastle and are well remembered. Rather sadly, riders like Simon Lambert and Danny Phillips are needed to fill in even though they were very forgettable as Diamonds, but time moves on and there aren't many former riders remaining.

What do you think this is doing??

As for your last point, I make it 11 former Diamonds riders still riding in the UK.  The seven named for tonight PLUS Danny King (obviously riding for Redcar), Victor Palovaara (riding for Edinburgh tonight), Paul Starke and Adam Roynon.

Who knows, maybe things are happening "behind the scenes" and they want to keep it quite?  We all know what has happened elsewhere with various ventures trying to resurrect clubs.  Someone always seems to come up with an excuse to block any new tracks being built, usually the space is down for housing, or there's a rare flower growing there, or it's a "haven" for wildlife.

Just a thought regarding Gilkes for Riss?I know the argument would be,it’s just a challenge,a run out,but Redcar need to get off to a good start this season after the last couple of seasons and give the fans some hope.Is it because, as a friend said Riss hasn’t rode a match for us yet, so it’s a reduced facility? My counter being,he rode in,got injured in,and won representing Redcar in a BSPA event. So surely not?But this is speedway after all!! If this is not the case, would of expected a much better guest, given Gilkes poor performance for us last season.

A guest in a friendly. Surely would have been better with R/R to give the Bears riders extra practice.

It's a challenge match, Redcar could've used Dan Bewley to guest if they wanted to (and could afford to).

Well, yes, but is one pre-season challenge really the limit of keeping the club's name alive? I think you know the point I'm making. If there are things going on in the background then great, not everything needs to be broadcast, and certainly no benefit in getting everyone's hopes up/dashed time and time again.

Not sure whether you're agreeing or disagreeing re. riders. It's sadly just facts that there aren't many riders left, and there'll be less and less the longer the club is inactive. If it needs a couple of fillers to make a team then nobody can really complain.

There are many obstacles to building a track these days, as you've said. You can add on noise complaints too. Probably the biggest obstacle of all is the current economic conditions, and who is really going to plough £100k's into a declining sport.

We'll perhaps never know how close we were/weren't to something coming to fruition not long before the closure, but sadly that oaf butcher put paid to any hopes.

Hopefully tonight is an enjoyable meeting.

Actually a decent meeting in front of a very healthy looking crowd with a good number of Diamonds fans.

Wright never really looked like being beat. King also looked excellent but Edwards was the pick of the Bears for me. Quick and more aggressive than last season. Reserves battled and both had decent rides without impressing too much.

Lambert is always good value around here along with Kerr, but Worrall won't have many meetings like that.

Enjoyable night all round.
