Cardiff GP 2025 Cancelled

Agree with a lot of that. Shouldn't have been on the calendar. BUT...what I strongly suspect is that organisers have to get the calendar out early and Cardiff was dependent upon funding from Welsh Govt. I expect that has been pulled, after all, if it's not attracting numbers and doing good business, then why would you invest tax payer money in it? Once that went, it's not viable.

As for Poland, well, that's the reality of where the sport is. It's the only lucrative market for speedway on the planet. He who pays the piper calls the tune.

Let's not forget there was a time when the World Final was held in the UK every year and riders qualified for that direct from the British Final. Same situation, different country.

I think the best way to process this is to be grateful for the 20 odd years we had at Cardiff. Few of us imagined speedway ever getting back into a major UK stadium after Wembley. It did and it was a joyful experience - particularly 2007.

Grateful for what? It was dreadful year after year after year.  Not one decent moment has ever come out of it

WBD managed to half the crowd from the moment they took over and then did pretty much nothing in the way of promotion to tempt those people back. Like @flagrag said they need to rent the stadium for a period of time to put the track in and that won't come cheap and then all of a sudden the numbers stop adding up. This time the decision truly has been made for "commercial reasons" but you can't help but think that if IMG were still the rights holders we'd all be off to Cardiff again next summer.

It has to be remembered that WBD and BSI previously are not event promotors they are the series rights holders . For example Warsaw is staged by PZM and then staging tracks are the promotors for other rounds with Belle Vue being a joint venture between BV Speedway and British Speedway promotors association.

Do I think that Cardiff would run in 2025 of still under BSI no I don’t think it would as crowds would still be the same levels

We'll never know, of course, but BSI did consistently build the crowd over the duration of their time at Cardiff until the final year, then all of a sudden it halved, yes you could mention Covid, but that doesn't seem to have effected the attendances at any other events.

BSI when in charge were always the promoters of the Cardiff GP- you must have a short memory- they used to promote other GP’s as well - Parken Copenhagen and Gelsenkirchen  Germany as well.

The decision itself is not a huge surprise.  I went to every Cardiff GP from 2001 to this year's, and 2024 did have the feel of a final visit.

However, the way it's been handled stinks.  If they had doubts about viability,  then drop Cardiff when they set the calendar.  To put it in, allow fans to arrange (expensive) accommodation etc, then move the goalposts three months later is a huge own goal.

I too had the feeling that I was at the last GP to be held in the Principality stadium. It's very sad.

The Harris moment will live forever as one of my best watching live Speedway.

Absolutely. What a night that was.

Too many glass half empty folks moaning. Drink up and get it refilled you miserable old gits or the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future will be with you imminently 😄

Personally, I’ve had great times in Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool and yes, Coventry too.

Sorry, that's ludicrous.  Harris' win in 2007 and Rickardsson's wall of death in 2005 are among the most iconic moments in GP history
