Workington 2025

The problem is, if the set a precedent by letting Workington change leagues "otherwise they pull out" what's to stop his happening at every AGM? A team doesn't get what it wants & threatens to walk away.

I totally agree with the logic of a North & South split, but this should have been decided at the NL meeting, if Workington weren't happy with the logistics, why agree to enter the NDT in the first place?

No one has said they wanted to change leagues, it may well have been they were told one thing and then it was changed. The top table have a habit of ‘tweaking things’ without full consultation. If Workington were ‘misinformed’ of the divisions competitors, and Im led to believe this was the case, then why should they then be bullied into fielding a side in a competition they didn't want to be in ?

Those are all perfectly valid points.

I don't understand the situation, because none of it makes sense. I'm only making assumptions based on what I've read on here.

I (perhaps nievely) believed at the NDL AGM, all 12 clubs came to an agreement then the competition rules / teams were announced.

I find it astonishing to imagine someone would change the rules / regulations after any agreement was made by the teams involved, so I never considered that a possibility?

Perhaps I'm giving the BSPL too much credit? Just being hopeful the sport will be run well.

Never ever assume any level of professionalism or consistency with modern day UK speedway, as the cancelled Cardiff GP has just proved.

and its only four away meetings anyway

could understand if it was double or treble that

And if Worky went NDL who would they sign? Most of the northern based riders will be committed to Edinburgh, Belle Vue, M'brough and Scunfield. How many southern based riders of a reasonable standard could they persuade to travel all the way to Workington.

The cancelled SGP has nothing to do with the BSPL. That’s a Warner/Discovery/FIM competition.

I didn't say it was there fault, but  its speedway and its in the UK . The sport in this country is a mess and spiralling further downwards season by season. Knee jerk decisions with no long term plan and no thought given to the fans.

Now we have to try to attract new fans to watch the sport by telling them that this rider rides for THREE teams….and a certain rider who rode in the premiership last season is now riding in a brand new division aimed at novices !

It appears the comets are not in the NDL trophy league anymore,  replaced by Leicester according to article in speedway star.

Hopefully the northern junior league is still running

Not totally surprised due to the make up of the southern based league,  would be financially unsuitable imo for the Comets to take part, but need something at northside to bring the kids on.  Maybe run a season long individual where each meeting has some heats and a final, and points carried on throughout the year, top 3 get prizes,  surely some sponsors would put up some bike related prizes.

As predicted Workington were not going to take part once they found out the true composition of the ‘ Trophy League ‘.

The former Redcar Cubs manager , Kevin Kay, proposed a NJL level mini grand prix series with individual riders competing at each track in full 5 ride meetings to include 125, 250 and 500 levels and a mini version for second halfs to replace the struggling NJL team league as they were struggling to fill the team places but it hasnt been taken up.

The kids need something like this and on a regular basis to give them more track time.

Totally agree but the season ahead is set some riders have 2 or 3 clubs to ride for others will have to wait for places of will it be RR getting all the spare rides

Not sure how that will work with them having 6 riders (Ben Trigger, Max James, Max Perry, Cooper Rushen, Ryan Ingram & Eli Meadows) already riding in the Trophy?

EDIT: just seen they have a separate team for the Trophy, well done Leicester.

No reason why Workington couldn't put a meeting like this on themselves?

Maybe other Northern tracks who don't have a Development league team (Glasgow & Berwick) could host a round too?

This comment on the SpeedwayGB page doesn't make Workington look good imo.

British Speedway chairman Rob Godfrey said: “With the timing of Workington making their decision, it was too late to move one of the (six) teams in the NDL across to the NDT, because they’d all already started or completed building their teams by then.

It does make me think, if they weren't happy with the make up of the league, why wait so long to pull out?

and you think Godfrey is going to accept blame for the situation ? Workington were mislead on the makeup of the ‘league’ and so took time in considering their options waiting to see if the other suggested team(s) were actually going to join but now someone else has been persuaded to join in so all is right in the speedway world, but you can keep blaming Workington if you wish.

Apparently Workington were still to confirm a decision about joining the trophy league, due to no  northern teams coming forward.  But someone in charge  ( Mr Godfrey ? ) released a press statement saying worky were going to be involved in the league

Then why wouldn't Workington put out a press release the day after the official statement saying they had only entered "provisionally" like King's Lynn? I don't understand why Workington would say nothing & allow themselves to look bad if they are not at fault?

Workington haven't said a single thing publically about not entering the NDT. All I have read is that they were in, now they are out.

Anyone who doesn't read the forum, could well think the same thing "why did they enter in the first place?"

Exactly ! Workington never said they were in ! The BSPL press release ( which Godfrey is head of ) said they were and now blames them for their hesitation when they never ever said they were in having been told , falsely, that other teams would be joining including a certain club in the north.

What you read between the lines is your issue, Workington have never said anything so don't insinuate that its their fault.
