Riders with unique styles/characteristics.

Have to agree on Andrew Silver. Probably my favourite ever rider, although I sometimes think he could have been even better if he'd changed his style. I sometimes wonder if he rode in that manner deliberately because it looked so damn cool!

He was a sensation for a few years at Swindon. To see him deliberately miss the gate on lane 4 and then cut under everyone on the first turn was one of the best things I've ever seen.

Another one at Swindon was Shawn McConnell. Possibly a degree of style over substance but well worth it! He tended to finish second or third in races. I once saw him about to win a race and pull a massive celebration wheelie that was so big he got passed. He came second.

Ivan Mauger was quoted as saying that his style needed "tidying" up as Andrew appeard to be riding four bends continually locking up and should have been smoother but I guess that's what made speedway so exciting back then to watch...individualist. Riders now look all the same.

Jack Millen and Tony Childs had what I would call an aggressive style, coupled with a "thou shalt not pass" attitude.

Aye, indeed, those were the days!!! :sad:

Brian Foote had similar characteristics as did Ted Hubbard, hard chargers. Brian  always having elbows out and left leg pointing forward going into bends. Fun to watch and both hated being beaten.

I was that much of a fan I badgered my dad to take me all the way to Swindon a couple of times, one time I was actually staying with family friends in Nailsworth and they took me to Blunsdon 1988 V Ipswich - Andrew scored an almost perfect 14 from 5 that day! Gary Chessell another ex Arena rider was riding for Swindon also and he scored 8 or so as well - i went home very happy!!

I can actually remember that match really well. It was one of the few matches that I enjoyed so much that I bought the video.

This is from it. Andrew Silver in red.

Thanks for that I was on the third and forth bend and remember that cutback - it was the sweetest move of all time!
