Vicar
Hello, I have a question about moniker of Sunderland team in 1964. It was Saints or Stars? Because I have found both versions in various sources Thank you
chunky
Looking at various "legitimate" sources, they were definitely The Saints in 1964.
The White Knight
1964 Sunderland 'Saints'. 1971 to 1973 Sunderland 'Stars'. 1974 Sunderland 'Gladiators', reverting back to 'Stars' three quarters of the way through the Season when the Promoters left and a new Promotion took over. And that was the end of Speedway in Sunderland for good.................... I only missed one Home Match all the time Sunderland ran - very happy days. The Stadium is still there, but, who knows???? I hope this helps. Edited November 7 by The White Knight Correction.

The White Knight
Yes, they did. I am struggling with my memory to recall the details of our final body colour. I will check my records and Post a description as best as I can.

I look forward to your future post, as Sunderland changing their body colours in their final league season has been lost to speedway history until now. I have looked at my records of those days and can only find black and white photographs. I can do no better than recommend the following Link: http://www.defunctspeedway.co.uk/Sunderland.htm If you scroll down you will find the 1974 Team near the bottom. Picture of the racejacket with the shield with the 'G' on it is the original 1974 racejacket*. (you can see on the Badge further up) If I remember correctly, the 'STARS' racejacket with the black 'G' on it was the final one. i) *Racejacket, Red Background with White Shield containing the letter 'G'. i)**Racejacket, Red Background with White Star containing Red Star with Black 'G' in the centre. I'm sorry but this is the best I can do. I hope it is of assistance to you. The excellent Website I recommend is hosted by John Skinner who has done a wonderful job for Speedway in general and North East Speedway in particular. 1

I am embarrassed to admit, being a massive Speedway fan since 1960, that I never knew at the time that Sunderland had a team, let alone know that former Hammer George Barclay was a team regular. In my defence I stopped attending league speedway following the demise of West Ham, and only attended league meetings between 1964 and 1971 featuring the Hammers.

Hi White Knight many thanks for the information. I do not know whether the shade of red is correct but here are images of Sunderland race jackets, I have made. Some are from 5-6 years ago when I first started making them. Any advice of the colour shades will be extremely helpful.
The White Knight
Nope - don't change anything - they are jolly good. (Just as I remember them). Thank you for this, brought back some great memories. 👍

I tell you what I did forget. 1964 Sunderland 'Saints' Racejacket - all red with a white running stick type man with halo above his head in the centre (running to the left) An example :- http://www.newcastlespeedwayhistory.co.uk/Sunderland.htm Vic Ridgeon the rider 2nd from the right in the Team photograph shows it very well. My thanks again to John Skinner. I don't know how I forgot to mention that - they introduced me to Speedway all those years ago.

Hi White Knight, I found a clearer image of a Sunderland race bib from 1964 on eBay to copy. On eBay UK there is a book on Sunderland speedway that you might be interested in. Once, again many thanks for your help. Edited November 17 by RobbieB
The White Knight
These are amazing. Thank you so much for doing this for me, I really do appreciate it. As regards the book, I already have it.
