TonyMac
YOUR RYE HOUSE For my regular Backtracking column in Speedway Star I'm asking fans of different clubs – past and present – for their personal thoughts on what immediately springs to mind whenever your team is mentioned. This time we're talking...RYE HOUSE - Roosters, Red Devils or Rockets! Gavan
Born in 1976 and my early days where at grass tracks (my uncle is Ray Andrews who was passenger for Dave ‘Ben’ Heath )….. first started speedway in 1982 at Rye house and memories of Garrad Naylor and Cox all in black and white check leathers and Andy Fines in red and white check and the histrionics of Mullarkey …. Always used to cheer for our reserves … Bryenton Chaplin and Ott and then the best of the lot came through Andrew Silver ….. then remembering Kerry Gray who came to my aunties on Christmas Day …. Good times
customhouseregularisback
My first ever speedway meeting was at Rye House in 1960. I remember standing up against the fence on the first bend and having to duck to avoid getting showered with dirt. Over the course of the season I got used to watching Clive Hitch,Geoff Mudge, the McGillivrays, Tommy Sweetman and others. Rye House fostered my love of speedway and when West Ham reopened in 1964 I transferred my allegiance to Custom House.
