Think he shot himself with a gun didnโ€™t he? Was brilliant in 2010 for Newcastle as well.

Didnโ€™t think he died or left permanently injured though. I may be wrong

What happened to him please?

Playing around in the garden with a gun and some mates and he managed to shoot himself in the head. He has recovered and he came over to Newcastle to present Archie Freeman (who idolised him) with his ย British 150cc Championship in 2019. Lovely guy, brilliant gater and he lives in Denmark and rides a big road bike. Could have been a great rider.ย

The first loss I recall is David Nix (Apologies if Iโ€™ve got the name wrong) in the early 00s at Kingโ€™s Lynn. I remember reading about it in the Speedway Star and becoming acutely aware how dangerous the sport was.

Lee Richardson was also a shock. I had drifted away from the sport by then, but Lee I was saddened by the news of his passing.

Former riders like Lawrence Hare, Neil Hewitt, David McAllan, Garry Stead, Darcy Ward, etc. gave their livelihood for our entertainment. I hope their combative and competitive mindsets that brought them to the sport have aided them in their new ways of life.

Heโ€™s in a wheelchair and has been since around 2007, as far as Iโ€™m aware.

I wasnโ€™t at the meeting, so this is second hand information, but Iโ€™m told Phil Morris took him out so badly, he was subsequently disqualified from the meeting. Iโ€™m happy to be corrected and in all honesty, hope I am.

I think David would be surprised to hear that heโ€™s in a wheelchair. Yes, he suffered long term and career ending injuries but heโ€™s one of the most positive people around - and mobile. I spoke to him and his wife at the Pairs at Oxford and they were then going on to Cardiff for the GP. Speedway was a sport not a living for David and, despite what happened, he is really upbeat about his time racing and his life in general. He held down a job when riding and continues to work now. He has also been spannering for Edinburghโ€™s Lasse Fredricksen.

As far as Armadale is concerned, heโ€™s certainly not โ€œleftโ€
