Gemini
The mouse is a real story, If I remember correctrly Ian Cartwright's day job was involved in the making of wooden furniture which always had a mouse carved in them. Gosh - I wish I had a better memory! I saw a programme a few months ago and Ian Cartwright was being interviewed in the workshop. He now owns the company which originally belonged to his grandfather (or great-grandfather!) I think Simon also works for him when racing commitments allow. salty
On a faintly related note, I read recently that Manchester United have banned their players from signing autographs, as they are concerned about signed memorabilia being sold on websites and auctions at inflated prices! All the better to sell as "official product" I guess. Makes you realise what a great bunch speedway riders are.
Team Man
George Greenwood also had a Motorcycle shop, was agent for the JAP/Rotax. I think it was Kensal Green, did go there once to get some spares for my Jap/Rotax, his son was running it then. Yes Honey,Alf's shop was in Leyton High Road. There is still a shop there but I'm not sure what it sells now,I know it's nothing to do with speedway or grasstrack anymore. When I go past there next weekend I will try and pay attention to what sort of shop it is. WATigerman
On the subject of autographs who would win the award for "least legible signature" ??
fatface
Kelly Moran's was a mess. Then again, he did write it in this 8-year-old's book whilst he had his tongue down some female fence-hanging fan's throat. Me: "Yeurch! Mum, that Kelly Moran is disgusting! Do you know what he was doing........"

spin king
I don't know about the messiest, but the tidiest was Phil White at Sheffield mind you it use to take him a minute to do one.
Genesis
Still ploughing through all the goodies left by our Forest Gate Great Aunts and the latest speedway item to materialise is one of their autograph books from the late 30's. Included that are legible are Arthur Atkinson, Rod Stobart[?], Tommy Croombs, Tiger Stevenson, Mick Murphy, Eric Chitty [signed with Ricky as a middle name], Dick Geary, E Langston[?], Ken Brett, Harry[?] Shepherd, Bluey Wilkinson, Frank Betts[?], Cliff Watson, Eddie Phillips, Phil Bishop, Jack Baker, ? Hewitt. Opening the book for the first time and realising that it was full of signatures from 65 years ago or more was very humbling. If anyone can help with confirming or correcting any of these it would be appreciated. There are more in there which I am unable to read but if anyone wants a crack at them I will be scanning them and putting them on my webshot site as soon as I can get the time. Does anyone know if any of the guys are still alive?
norbold
Yes and Harry Shepherd is also right.

kimhomestead
Can't help with the name Zilinger, but the other two are Bob Lovell and Jack Hughes. (Incidentally Hughes and Arthur Forrest were brothers-in -law) Also the Ron Pearson should be Ron Peace.
Ian H
Great story Norbold. I do hope a great find like that finds a good home, be it with yourself or some other old-time fan who will cherish it. It does make me think that it is a shame there is no British Speedway Museum. What a fine exhibit that would be. There is a very good, no excellent speedway museum near Edinburgh but I suppose it's not "British" if it is not in England If you are in the area and it is open it is well worth a visit
