Unearthing a supply of "Simon Lambert's" rather than specifically finding a "Robert Lambert"... Which is a very sensible plan... I am just not sure doing it in the top league is the way forward as the standard on show is too high for many of them to compete... They need to be nurtured, not disillusioned as they progress... And watching several almost a whole straight behind race winners last year won't be doing anyone any good, most of all the sport itself as it tries to keep crowd numbers at acceptable levels.. Great post! Looking at the averages in the championship the other day asking where are the next line of heat leaders coming from. Doubling up seems to have taken away the mid level riders in the lower division that step up once the top boys move on. The RS should have been at that level to push the riders we've lost over the last 5/10 years into the second string/3rd heat leader roles. Think you nailed it with the Simon Lambert example. Poland haven't seen many of their top level juniors kick on at the world stage as expected but they are still performing at a very good standard in their domestic leagues. From the u21 final 10 years ago, only Ellis, Howarth and Coles are still riding. Phillips and Mountain were meeting reserves and the only ones still with a league place from the qualifier. The Polish junior final that year had, Musielak, Pieszczeck, Przedpelski, Gomolski, Zmarzlik, Smektala, Woryna, Pawlicki, Wozniak, Gala and Cyfer.

Ellis has shown promise on and off, but Howarth is what they called in the old days a journeyman. As for Coles, It just shows how poor the standards are now. Whereas the Polish equivalent is light years ahead of us. World Champion and some Ex GP riders!!

Second string in the Championship is as good as he will get. He has been a heat leader the past few seasons in the CL so already proven that point.

Take Connor Coles and Jack Smith last night, they looked a pair of complete novices. I don't know how long he's been riding but Connor is 30 years of age. Jack is 24. Do you think these two will eventually develop? They have rode most of their careers in the NDL. Now because the CL is so weak they find themselves riding in the CL outclassed on a regular basis, only beating riders who themselves are of NDL standard. The CL, we are getting told will most likely be weaker again next season !!! I bet the entrance fee won’t reflect on that though! Only a small number of riders ever become World Champ. I said that riders develop at different rates, and it's clear that some reach higher levels than others ... and of course, some don't really progress, but are happy to keep plugging away. I think Jenkins could still become a much better rider.
