R.I.P Laurie Etheridge

Recommended Posts

Sad to hear about the death (via his wife on Facebook) of former rider Laurie Etheridge. Laurie rode for the likes of Exeter, Rayleigh, Hackney, Crayford, Sheffield, Coventry and Canterbury.  He won the 1975 National League Riders Championship.

Very Sad news.

Remember him as a Hawk at Hackney in early 70's, transferred from Rayleigh.

Every dog has his day right ? Laurie had his at Plough Lane one night. I am going to say 1971 or 1972, i think most likely the latter.

Very much a reserve at Waterden Road, he was not this night though, i was there !

Laurie was flying from the tapes and winning races at Wimbledon !

The Dons, trailing, announced a double tactical substitution , Ronnie Moore and Trevor Hedge !! The King Pins of Wimbledon Speedway.

The figured against Laurie Etheridge they would get a five one ? Nope, Laurie flew from the tapes and beat the pair of them.

i think he scored 8 or so that night, he was brilliant and the teams unsung hero, Hackney were victorous.

RIP Laurie you were a great Hawk..

was arguable an even greater Kestrel; the team captain when I started to follow the sport in 1980 and probably skippered Crayford in more matches than any other rider. He had seen his best days before my arrival but was still capable of some good performances at London Rd.
