I'd think they must have a number one lined up, otherwise why would they release Harris?

If they're going down the strength in depth option, Harris would work out.

Not convinced we have a number 1 lined up, a season of struggle ahead at this level.

Rumour brewing that Schlein might be retiring which could fall in line with the Dan Gilkes situation.

Rumour was Schlein to Oxford so maybe the management were informed just in time to make a late offer to Dan Gilkes which is why he wasn't announced at Sheffield?

Seems an odd choice to offer a 3 point rider a spot to replace a 5 point rider you had planned to use though?

If it was a week before the season, I'd understand it?

It is odd... Someone mentioned it the other day, but does it throw doubt on Riss being signed up?  If the Spires go for Riss and Gilkes, they have over 10 to play with... Unless they are deliberately building well under the limit and anticipating someone becoming available during the season to then switch in perhaps

I agree.

Perhaps Peter wants Gilkes for a bit of continuity considering he's likely to replace Boughen in the Cheetahs side.

If Schlein is retiring and a Number 1 isn't available then I'd be aiming for this instead of going for Gilkes.

I know S. Worrall gets a lot of negativity but he's been thrown in at the deep end when riding for certain clubs, He's a No.2/No.6 and this line-up would see him riding in that team position throughout the season.

Agreed with some of the comments above, I reckon that Gilkes has signed instead of the rumoured Schlein and that will mean no Riss giving them more points for the last 2 rather than being that far below the points limit

Didn't Berwick confirm Schelin for their Championship team a week or so ago? Have things changed since then?

Yes but rumour is since then he's had an offer from work that's too good to turn down.

Harris himself said when dropped

That doesn't sound like a rider who didn't want to stay

Bomber's own FB page (30th Oct) suggests that it wasn't a straightforward parting of the ways:
