Worst Referee.

If riders made as few mistakes as referees do which affect races and match results then they would have something to complain about.
No referee/umpire/judge/assistant in any sport sets out to do a bad job nor do players/riders/competitors.
In all cases the officials final decision is just that...final and we should be grateful we have them to make those decisions 'cuz without them we have no sport.

But, as spectators/fans that should not disallow us from the opportunity to have a moan at/about both players and officials - Its all part and parcel of life which we need to get on with and accept (grudgingly) that mistakes can and do happen.

No referee sets out to do a bad job but when they constantly fall short of the mark in terms of consistency, you have to question if they should be doing the job at all.

I always felt refs were and are fair, the thing about a refs call is it’s mostly subjective, it’s the way they see it and not everyone will agree but that’s ok, yes they make mistakes but mostly it’s just a subjective call so it will always be wrong in someone’s eyes, I always believed that if you had a 50/50 decision go against you the next time it happens the ref will give it in your favour, unless of course you gave them a piece of your mind then they might just remember that

Yes, it also has to be remembered that the refs box usually gives pretty much the best view in the stadium most of the time. I’ve been in the refs box when decisions were pretty clear cut and well sighted , especially at the start/finish line but you get fans looking at things across the track from a different angle insisting the ref was wrong, when in fact it’s their perception that was wrong.  It’s also actually very difficult for a ref to keep an eye on the whole race when there it’s well spaced out with two at the front and two more fighting it out the length of a straight behind.

Overall I think the refs do a decent job.

Watching last night’s meeting on TV, I have no team allegiance but some of the decisions were certainly questionable?

As an ex-football referee and match assessor I am amazed that speedway referees are not assessed at meetings by ex-referees or qualified / experienced match assessors. If this was implemented, it would help the current referees to enhance their performance and eliminate supporters questioning decisions like last night by supporters throughout the UK. I appreciate some riders did not help the referee by their actions last night either, but an assessor would observe and advise for the future.

Sorry just my thoughts as I know what it is like as a referee receiving comments from players, supporters, and media and how having a neutral person there supporting and guiding for the future.

My mother, a Belle Vue Aces fan, and I, a Wimbledon Dons fan, went to see our teams meet at Plough Lane with Reg Trott as referee. Every decision he made during the meeting both of us agreed was wrong. Every referee has a bad meeting but Reg seemed to excel in having a bad meeting every time we saw meetings he was in charge of.

If I recall he upset Bob Dugard on one occasion at Arlington when he was the referee and Bob wanted him banned from officiating at future meetings there...and of course Reg once rode for the "Eagles!"

I will not name the referee (suffice it to say it was a lady) who refereed the Premier League Grand Final at Owlerton in 2022. She made several basic refereeing errors throughout the match, but her decision in Heat 11 cost Sheffield the match and the championship.

Tigers were trailing by two on aggregate before Heat 11. Tobi Musielak passed Brady Kurtz fairly up the inside down the back straight of lap three, but Kurtz made a suicide passing attempt on turn 3 and, as expected, came down. Beyond anyone's belief, Musielak was disqualified, turning a 3-3 into a BV 5-1. Should never have happened.

Just got the following response:

Dear Sir.

Thank you for your email, the comments of which are noted.

It would be inappropriate of me as the Independent Chairman of the SCB to make any comment with the exception that referees are assessed.

Thank you for supporting our great sport and that you continue to do so.

Yours in sport.

Jim Lawrence

SCB Chairman
