Is there any particular reason why SoN2 has 8 teams competing while SoN has 7?

Because Great Britain finished last in the last running of the SON2 and shouldn't technically be in the meeting but because they are the hosts they changed the format

But GB are seeded through to the final of SoN1 against 6 other teams qualifying from 2 semis also consisting of 7 teams??

Yes but the difference is in SON 2 there are 8 teams who go straight into a final- Sweden finished last in 2022 so are back in this season. Whereas SON has 15 nations in it.

I'm sorry, I don't know if I'm being thick (don't answer that!) but I still don't get it... is it because there were 7 quali spots up from last year but because GB came last they've made it 8? Or were there qualifiers this year and what happens if a nation that aren't currently in it want to be in it,  USA for example?

It’s always been a normal 7 team SON 2 with 8 teams of suitable good riders to warrant  being in it. It hasn’t happened before where the team finishing last the year before are the actual host nation and have to be in the meeting( no crowd otherwise) If another country suddenly produces good enough riders to warrant inclusion then the FIM have a decision to make.
