Workington v Recar 04/05/24 3pm koc 2nd leg

Recommended Posts

Well done the Bears whom I believe got their first ever victory at Worky. Best of luck for the next round and thanks to the fans who travelled over and were well rewarded with a convincing victory.

The Bears gated better and found speed where the home Comets weren't able to. I had a feeling it was going to be one of those days when Cookie made a rare mistake in heat 1 which allowed Charles through for the win, then Claus nearly wiped out an obviously faster Tate in heat 3  which put him out of the race before Cookie lifted while under pressure from Erk Riss in heat 6 and had to bin it. It was without doubt from a Comets fan perspective the most disappointing performance of the season, a bad day at the office and definitely one to forget about.

The weather was quite miserable with constant drizzle and misty low cloud not great for speedway, track prep re watering must have been a nightmare . The weather adversely affected the attendance something all promotions can do without.

Thanks to Glasgow pair James Pearson and Paul Stark for guesting . Young James in particular caught the eye.

For the Bears Jason Edwards was unrecognisable from the rider who scored 2 on his previous visit with 14 points,  conversely Jonas Knudsen who scored 12 on his previous visit only managed 2 today . Erik Riss was impressive and confirmed he is definitely over his health issues with 13 points. Like Cookie at Glasgow Charles Wright fell foul of the new rule around starts in heat 13 and went off 15 metres. Connor Bailey was also good value for his 8 points.

redcar were up for it  and adapted to track better which often happens with away teams on a track the home riders are not use to

the 2 glasgow riders were good guests for workington

Anyone think bears done better without king? Dont think he would have matched riss score redcar fans wishing he going to be missing a while?? Right off finish off these sour grapes!

There can be no doubt Riss has done better than King.

Starke could only replace Liebmann, so that's a simple answer.

Edwards was brilliant today, best rider out there by a mile. Riss was also impressive his skills on a bike are brilliant.

Comets just weren’t at the races today, getting out the start was winning you a race more than not. Well done to Redcar.

Can’t win them all so the focus should now be getting it dialled in at home for the league. Track wasn’t its usual racey self today because of the weather. None stop drizzle all day didn’t help and crowd was low because of it. Can’t say it shouldn’t of been on (even though it shouldn’t of been) because it’ll be oh you’re a sore loser

Sorry Workington speedway, got as far as ASDA driving down, wipers on constant to clear the drizzle, decided against it and went home.  Memories of watching several meetings at Derwent Park in poor conditions, races essentially decided coming out of the first/second bend and then a follow-my-leader procession with riders well separated and more occupied with pulling tear-offs than racing.  Track may well have been rideable but not much enjoyment or entertainment for riders or fans alike in those conditions.

Completely agree, apart from the odd battle there wasn’t really much entertainment. Not an excuse just a fact, Redcar faster out the gate and that’s what won it for them.

Got to have sympathy for the promoters in that sort of situation when you've got riders from both teams travelling from all over the country and away supporters coming over as well.  But it can turn into a bit of a "going through the motions" just to get the meeting completed and crossed off the calendar.

Probably didn't water the track with the weather like it was and forecast to get a bit worse which indeed it did. The visibility can't have been great with the drizzle and the track top surface definitely got wetter.  I personally witnessed many tear offs being pulled off.  It was a difficult situation for the promotion to be in and maybe in retrospect from a financial and entertainment point of view one couldn't have argued if they had called it off early. Worky had about 13mm of rain yesterday afternoon/overnight and the practice day had to be cancelled this morning due to the state of the track.

Quick question can Redcar replace Knudsen with Riss ?

Didn't they try to get Riss as a short term replacement for King but there was too many fixture clashes, so can't see him replacing anyone else in the team even if it did fit.

I wouldnt say the track was in "great" condition, but it was rideable. The biggest problem, and most likely unavoidable, was that the outside line which many of our home riders love to ride on, was too heavy and thick due to the weather. The likes of Tate were trying it out but were coming unstuck in wet mucky track. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I would agree that a call off would have been better. But at the start of racing it didnt look as if that would have been necessary !

still enjoyed it  . riders hace rode/raced in far worst conditions than last saturday .

tear offs are there for a reason , to tear off !  lap times were a bit slower , but still good .

well done to all riders who took part , good effort .

thank god you do not have to go to plymouth and endure that  week in , week out .. UTM
