The NFL as was is probably no more due to the none availability of clubs, Workington have moved up due to NFL not being available in enough meetings, mildenhall and Berwick withdrawn, big doubts about Kent. So only a couple of clubs may run a team, the bspa have said some form of junior or NFL racing will go ahead, but they have not thought about how it's gonna work yet,

NDL riders at the speedway show were very optimistic with Oxford, Leicester and Belle Vue confirmed and rumours of joint teams running out of Scunthorpe and possibly another northern based track. With so few league fixtures looking likely clubs will be looking for date fillers and a small NDL commitment could be the answer, if they can find the riders willing to ride for fun and just expenses rather than profit so less financial risk to the host clubs. But we will all have to wait and see …

They've already announced at least six clubs will be fielding teams in the NDL - just haven't confirmed which clubs that will be.

The AGM press release said: "Six clubs have already stated their intention to take part in the NDL next season, and further details will be available in the coming weeks."

Oxford, Leicester, Belle Vue and then fill in the blanks...

Six clubs have already stated their intention hopefully they'll all follow through with that. But after rumors of no NL, I'm just happy it's continuing.

Not to mention racing for experience, to develop as riders. Probably a fault if lower level speedway is riders assuming because they can ride a bike, they should be paid for it?

I know it's an expensive sport, but they can treat it like free practice / an apprenticeship, rather than a paying job.

With all the issues of organising fixtures in recent year & with apparently all 6? Clubs being second teams. I'd suggest racing once home & once away, no KOC no play-offs, teams will have till the end of October to race 5 league meetings. Should manage that.

Not a lot of racing for the riders, but they could pick up rides in seconds half's, plus the new individual series & if you're based in the south (or willing to travel), Nora racing on the IoW.

To be fair the majority of NDL riders aren't looking to make a profit just cut their losses. Free practice is one thing but the fixtures then need to be held on more hospitable dates, namely weekends. Try telling a rider that he needs to invest heavily every winter, use multiple holiday days for midweek fixtures and be dictated to when/where they ride.

There is a sport wide problem of paying more than clubs can afford but if the move is towards an amateur format it won't be practical to run a nationwide league.

Interesting wording in the NDL announcement. "no rider who has achieved a CL average of 4.00 or above will be eligible to take part". That reads as in ever achieved over 4 in the CL....wil try and compose a list later but means a lot of 'big' names pushed out of the NDL....and in reality a decision long overdue.

Re-reading a point of interest will be the achieved 4.00 or above, riders like Hook, Pearson etc were assessed a 4.00 CL average but didn't achieve it, if commonwealth riders can get a place at the expense of a Brit then it is very questionable logic.

Will there be enough riders of sufficient quality to fill the 6 teams? An older more experienced pair of hands who has achieved an average of 4 or over in the championship would be beneficial to the less experienced riders, would they not? Sings has already identified 10 riders from this years teams who are no longer allowed to ride.

I'm no legal expert but could prohibiting any rider who has achieved a 4 point championship average be a restraint of trade?

As always, there are more questions than answers.

I think the emphasis with the NDL now is really going to be on development. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. With no stand-alone clubs there is no conflict of interest between sides there to win at all costs and those there to develop riders in a competitive environment. I’ll add that I am very sad to see any clubs close. That we’ve lost two from the third tier is incredibly sad.

The over 4.00 Championship rule is no coincidence and again, I’m not against it. The likes of Morley and Clegg shouldn’t still be in the third tier over a decade after their debuts, especially now that the league is truly being framed as a development league. What could have helped riders of that ilk is tighter doubling up rules between the Premiership and Championship. They would be more sought after for clubs in the second tier then.

It’s important to remember that the sport doesn’t owe riders a team place though. This is a step in the right direction when it comes to the sport telling the riders the rules to play by rather than bending to their will. At least if it is enforced.

Is not allowing certain riders in restriction of trade? No, it’s the rules. I’d love to be a Premier League footballer but I don’t get a go just because I fancy it, nor can I take legal action over it.
