So was “robins” to be fair  but that didn’t stop people watching them

That's because we were used to it.

It never stopped me following the the” robins”from 2007 it was the last thing on my mind, I was just happy to have speedway close by after Oxford closed.

perhaps they should be called Oxford Morris men

I don't know why its not Oxford Cheetahs 'A' and Oxford Cheetahs 'B'?

My first thought before the final name was announced was "Oxford Blues" - simply because it sounded "Oxfordy" and they have blue ( & yellow ) racesuits.  Not keen on Spires at all but probably not the worst team name ever.   Top of the list for me would probably be " Yarmouth Bloaters" way back in the 50s-60s ?

It's not that it stops me going - it's just that I'm looking for Oxford to in"spire" me (see what I did there) to get me along.

Oxford Rebels would have inspired me.

It takes a lot to get me into a speedway stadium these days. I kind of want to support Oxford (I was born there, after all, and it is just as easy for me to get to as Swindon is) but I'm still not feeling it, ya know! Two years it's been back, and I've been twice - once each year. Premier league might get me along more though.

How about the Morris Oxford. That's a car don't you know.

For oldies like me, it should have been Cheetahs.

I think they might have worried that if they CL team wasn't called The Cheetahs people might desert it for the PL team.

Nicknames can mean a lot, don't you agree Toady? :D

ITs a novel idea .... dont think it has ever been tried running teams in both the top 2 leagues? With mos clubs running only once a fortnight , weekly speedway alternating   PL and CL might just attract a good regular crowd.

Not so sure about the NDL. That comment applies to any NDL club to be honest.  Not sure it is viable with so few clubs and such irrelgular fixtures?

Did the "Spires" come wit ha sponsorship deal from the City Council ?

Given the craft  plying the Cherwell.

Maybe

The Punters

It’s an unusual name but we will get used to it . End of the day need to remember it’s three very separate teams so can’t name them Cheetahs 2 or whatever . Nicknames don’t matter it’s all about Oxford isn’t it ?

Yeh, that’s what I was getting at with morris men

I was assuming, of course, that you know that my surname is Morris - which you may or may not.

No didn’t know,  pure coincidence only , my reference was to the heritage of the Morris to Oxford, Cowley, Isis etc etc

Ha ha. I thought they were topical jokes based on my name and then suddenly realised that you can't actually see what my name is!

Surely as they're OX in COWley, a more meaty, bovine theme, Oxford Bulls, Buffalos, Bos or Bison. Or Blackbirds after the local estate. Royals or Cavaliers as it was Civil War HQ. Or Morrismen after the nearby car factory. As they race in yellow, the Daffodils, Pansies, Great T1ts. The best name would be Oxfam Robins:) Where did that Silver Machine name come from? The Spires is not inspiring.

I know Simon King, one time drummer was from Ox, plus fellow Hawk Nik Turner was born there. There's another name, Hawks!
