I was 17 when it closed after the wheels. I was brought up with speedway as my dad had been a young fan himself at Perry Barr when he was a child. Birmingham lost those generations of prospective new fans between 1987 and 2007. Unfortunately during those 21 years life and what to do with your leisure time changed massively too. This confirms greyhounds will move from Perry Barr also ARC managed. Death knell for Perry Barr Stadium as dogs are cast majority of income there. Timescale yet to be confirmed. All they have to do is lay a dog track, fence, hare on the infield right in front of a huge Stand bars, restaurants and Hotel. The Kennels will be a simple build adjacent to stables. Indeed, ARC could argue that the brand new facilities are "state of the art" when it comes to the welfare of the dogs, so a big move forward as to how they get looked after compared to the ageing infrastructure at Perry Barr.. Fair play to the Brum Promoters for giving it a go, as they certainly seem to have given it everything, but, at some places it just isn't viable, no matter what you do... I have been three times and each time felt "young" such was the demographic of their fan base, with around a hundred it seemed "wearing the club shop", so a loyal fan base was in place.. But now, around ten years or so later, I would imagine many in the stadium at that time would now no longer be able to get there, given their ages... Would make sense to have a Monday race night, even if it was just in the hope that a few Wolverhampton supporters paid a visit etc...... I was told by someone in the previous promotion that ARC income from dogs 6 days a week purely from TV rights was in the region of 70k. Before you sell a meal or booze which is lucrative too at weekend dogs. Clearly Speedway rent and minimal booze and food income 15 times a year will mean I suspect that once the dogs transition the gates will be locked and stay locked for good. Given the income loss once Dogs transition to Wolverhampton, I can't see any way Speedway can continue. I suspect that is what Nigel was referring to in his latest update. If dogs moved in May as an example they could be looking at a 280k shortfall from no dogs to have Speedway til end of September. Dogs will need a few months of trials too to regrade at new track and to test everything. So ARC won't want to delay a moment longer than necessary.
