Robyn1972
The "Andrew Silver" thread got me thinking about other riders I remember from when I was going regularly. Having been out of touch for a few years there are quite a few who've vanished completely.......anyone know what they're doing these days? Paul Whittaker? Andy Galvin (Have a feeling he was never really back on form after his nasty injuries - would I be right?) Green twins - Simon & Derek - lovely pair of guys - Derek had a terrible crash at one point I remember and was a bit "touch and go" for a few days, but pulled through. Scott Humphries? (Back in Aus I assume). Great to see that Alan Mogridge is still riding - he was always fantastic to watch!
SCB
Andy Galvin has spent the last 2 years riding for Arena Essex in the PL. He struggled to average 4 but was not helped by the fact he kept finding himself at number 2 or 4 because of the way the Arena Essex teams were built. He said in the Speedway Star about a month back that he is having(or had) some operation and he is still keen and wants to ride in the Premier League. Hard to believe that the rider who has rode for Arena the last 2 years was once the Carl Stonehewer of his time!! Moggo is just as fantastic to watch these days
shazzybird
I met up with Andy at Collier Street last year. He was telling me about the injury to his arm and how slow it was in healing. Really embarrassing he said I hadn't changed since we were kids at Canterbury
norbold
Shazzy, do you know what happened to the former Canterbury rider called Steve Hone? I've often wondered and thought you might know....
Robyn1972
Really embarrassing he said I hadn't changed since we were kids at Canterbury Ouch! He always did have a "way with words" lol! You must have known his Dad too then I guess?

You must have known his Dad too then I guess? I'm sure Shazzy new Andy's dad Chris as I did. Smashing guy and went on many an away trip with him. One notable occasion he turned up for a northern tour in his Rolls Royce despite me telling him to bring his other car - and Opel! Somewhat embarrasing moments - 1. We ran out of fuel on the A19 near Middlesbrough and 2. Got a puncture in the sheffield car park! Life didn't treat Chris that kindly in his latter years and he was not in the best of health. He lived in rented accommodation near to where I and the ex were and often came round for dinner. Sadly he had a massive stroke one night, was rushed to hospital and subsequently died. iris123
Paul Whittaker? One of my favourite riders when he was at Hackney.Didnt progress as well as i thought he would.Saw him ride for Eastbourne in95 and in the programme it mentions he had a "couple of confidence-sapping seasons",before joining them.At the time he only had an average of 3.72 Edited May 7, 2004 by iris123
salty
I remember when Paul was 14 or 15 and he used to have after the meeting rides at Plough Lane. Honestly thought he would go onto really big things, but a nasty injury (was it at Middlesbrough?) seemed to knock the stuffing out of him. fatface
As I recall he had a nasty accident in which he nearly lost his arm. He came back but with one of his arms not working properly, he was never going to be the rider he was.

Hi Bryn - forgotten me already?! I remember the Rolls well - do you remember the trip to Kings Lynn when we left Hackney horrendously late one saturday afternoon? Got stopped half way up the M11 by the plods, who let Chris off with a warning as "they couldn't catch the jag " (which he was following)!!! Also remember some good trips with Chris in the Opel - one notable one down to Poole when we had Whitty & Mark following us as they didn't know the way - kept nearly losing them at roundabouts! Apparently when I got to Swanley station where I was being picked up to see Paul Whitt waiting for me my face was a picture! Chris was indeed a smashing guy - I was really sad when I heard of his death but had many happy memories of late nights in the Vic Harding lounge with the card game going on, eating Snowy's superb bacon sarnies and sharing my chocolate buttons with Chris! Still think of him regularly - one of life's genuinely good people. Hadn't heard about Paul's accident at all - poor devil - things like that always happen to the nicest people for some reason. I do recall hearing a rumour that he'd married Tracey Swales? Is that right? Edited May 7, 2004 by Robyn1972

Robyn1972
The guys always used to get a great reception at Berwick.....it was a great place to go as a fan too - esp when we won (46-45 in '89!!!)! Banditsbabe - I wonder if you're who I think you are?!!

jackofdiamonds
Talking of Mr Mogridge, he put a 15+1 from six rides last night at Le Stade Brough. Match winning performance.

You're reporting on the IOW now I see from the Speedway Star......I've been missing my speedway due to work circumstances for a few years but am getting just as hooked as ever again now, and living 25 minutes from Rye House so may see you there at some point in the season.....
