First Sponsored Team Jacket?

I always remember Barry Sheene and Suzuki. It seems he went to Suzuki just around the time of Barrow and Peter Shilton's personalised top. But motorsport were one of the front runners in sponsorship. But jut after the German Worms example

One of the first sponsorships in the history of Formula 1 most likely dates back to 1968 when, during the South African Grand Prix, a team  Brabham’s private race car driven by John Love took to the track in the colors of the Gunston cigarette brand.

Always remember the JPS special driven by Ronnie Peterson. Which seems to be 1974

Reminds me of the story that Ivan Mauger told that when he wore his Duckhams personalised race jacket during a second half at Coventry promoter Charles Ochiltree attemped to stop him from racing? Ivan being ivan just ignored him...how times have changed as regards sponsors and apparently they would laugh about that episode years later.

I seem to remember Ivan associated with Ricard. Also Egon Müller with Eco and Barum

Formula One seemed to attract cigarette manufacturers...there was, from memory, "Gold Leaf" Lotus and of course Marlboro (also big sponsors of speedway) and probably the most pleasing looking car was the JPS. Even Brooke Bond got into the act I remember.

Wolves had "Beacon Radio" and Crayford "Ladbrokes" both in 1978.

I had forgotten when they were sponsored exactly. Problem is, I haven't gone through any of the old Speedway Stars for photos, and the Retro Speedway website doesn't have any 1978 photos for either team!

If I remember Ivan took an impromptu break during the 1977 season at the resort privately owned by Ricard and Exeter used a facility in his absence which was somewhat ironic considering Ivan's stance regarding the facility White City had been granted that season (among others less publicised since)?

I have no idea where mine are! As far as I know, I never got rid of them when I emigrated (I certainly never intended to), but I have all my other books, and I'm just missing them...

Yes I gave away many of my speedway books when I re-located but have slowly replaced them purchasing off ebay. As for my programmes...a sad loss.

As I said before, my parents got rid of a ton of old programmes (including most of the 1950's World Finals, and Malmo 1961), Speedway Stars and other mags, and a lot of the old Astorias annual. Even now, it kills me to think about it...

I liked it better when teams had jackets without advertising e.g. in 1964 Newport with black and amber quarters, Middlesbrough with red and white quarters and as I recall Hackney with red and blue quarters and a gold diagonal stripe. I never liked their bue and white checkered  jacket with a hawk on it-too fussy for me!!! Also riders with black leathers other than Broady and Nigel Boocock of course. Life was simpler. Me and my mate would have a pint of beer at the Someron Park bar -Whitbread Trophy as I remember -what happened to that brand for God's sake. On another subject-big thanx to Chunky for keeping up to date the oldest World Finalist List- much appreciated mate
