GP Round 1 Gorican Saturday April 29th

Recommended Posts

I was never a big fan of the GP,s but the series was something new and i embraced it, but it became played out for me a few seasons ago, apart from being mainly a closed shop its becoming a one horse race, Zmarslik was always going to win last season and barring injury and mechanical issues cannot see any serious challenger for his title, hes a great talent and a nice bloke not his fault hes way above the rest but the series is becoming boring.

Watching him at work was probably one of the most entertaining things about last night... he was doing his job and he was doing it really well, British Speedway are lucky to have him onboard... I just hope it's not too late!

What exactly is he going to bring to British Speedway? Genuinely what are his credentials? Aside from almost paralysing David McAllan.

Is he though? How can we be sure that Bartosz is the best around if he cannot prove it against the still undefeated 2021 World Champion?

At the moment his wins are "asterix" wins. He is a Joe Frazier rather than a Muhammad Ali.

He may well be a class above any other rider now, but he needs to prove it because last time he was pitted against Artem Laguta he lost.

The Russians need to be there.

You can only beat what's in front of you I'm afraid. Your right we need the Russians back. Laguta could have been a double world champion for all we know. But he's not which is a real shame .

Yea it's shocking that the best rider wins every year..  Not sure what this closed shop is.. You have a route to make it to the GPS if your good enough..The old system. One off world finals was a complete Joke and rely on luck most of the time..

Jan O' Pedersen hasn't defended the 1991 title yet so everything since then has an asterix.

Laguta no doubt had a fine Dave Norris season in 2021 but, as with all Russians in sport, you have to question whether they were up to something when they win.  Going from a bang average gating tart that struggled to make the top 8, to the worlds best in 5 minutes was no doubt 'fishy'.

Zmarzlik has proven it over a number of years, only failing to medal once in SGP. Would Laguta have coped with the technical Warsaw and Cardiff tracks in 2021? We'll never know.

He might do yes. It’s quite the stretch to suggest it’s a certainty that he’ll improve things however. Running about with a headset on directing tractors is quite different to heading up the league.

Everyone banging on about Zmarzlik being a cut above… Yes he is currently the best around but if Doyley had of not hit a rut he probably would have won it …. Likewise the Brit boys handing him gate one in the semi

Zmarzlik is simply the most consistent makes every semi where as riders like Madsen and Janowski always bomb out once or twice like tonight … and even Tai Lambert and Doyle will have meetings where they done make the semis … Zmarzlik seems to make every semi and often turns that into a final

It shows there is something wrong with the scoring system if the commentators don't know who ranks higher, it's unforgivable that the organisers can't work it out!

They clearly don’t have anyone backstage now that is technical minded for these situations, didn’t Phil Rising use to cover these situations.

Having said that it doesn’t happen very often because race wins, seconds, thirds and various other finishes usually sorts it as well as who beat who but in last nights meeting it was all equal, perhaps a simple run off would have been the obvious answer going forward, it wouldn’t haven’t taken any longer than the delay last night either but lack of common sense always shows up in speedway especially the U.K.

I do agree with others that we had an easy scoring system when it was you got the GP points you actually scored on track during the meeting, the current system seriously favours riders who pull out one good semi start or race when they have just scraped into the semis.

Didn't it happen at the end of last season when nobody realised Tragic had got the bronze medal? It happens quite a bit with this ludicrous scoring system

They don`t need anyone backstage because the FIM meeting secretary ( Graham Brodie/ Mick Posselwhite) confirm the position at the end of 20 heats and confirm semi line-up and at the end of the meeting issue the FIM official result sheet.

But seriously...

In all my time watching speedway I can think of only 2 "asterix" situations.

1990 and Shawn Moran being stripped of second place.

2022 and 23. Russians were banned from competing.

Nothing else deserves an asterix. Asterixes are well special.

Which begs the question why did it take so long to come up with the answer, because it didn’t go into the Semi finals as quick as it normally does.

You've missed the biggest "asterix" situation ever... the whole 2020 GP season!
