Kings Lynn v Sheffield KO Cup - 30th March

Recommended Posts

Outcome of this one then (apart from weather winning)?   Could the fact that the Kings Lynn boys practice session was rained off help Sheffield who have raced two league meetings already and their riders taken part in sparing (Poland) and individual/challenge matches also?

Sheffield had a good record at the Adrian Flux Arena last year with majority of the team going well around the circuit, Kings Lynn have been built solid (not spectacular) and sure as all teams want to get off to a flyer at home, be interesting to see how KK gets on.

Can see a Sheffield victory (43-47) if the weather plays ball and the away side ride like they have done on their last few visits

Carrying on from last season calling off the day before, thought they might have learned from last year.

This is where you won't please everyone. Some think it's good to postpone a day before going on weather forecasts, and some prefer to leave it until the day.I prefer myself to leave it until the day.The forecast don't look too bad now for tomorrow but that could revert back to the original one I see.At least we know now and cab make alternative arrangements.

I think this is how Speedway is heading nowadays. Clubs don't want to risk poor crowds in bad weather, or calling matches off just before / after start times - so the safest option is to cancel hours or days ahead.

There's enough gaps in the fixture list to only race in good weather (well maybe).

Biggest issue is holidaying fans, planning fixtures ahead of time (happened to me) but for the majority, early call offs saves time & money!

I guess that with early call off flights into UK can be avoided and programmes not produced, so all helps keeping costs down.

Hate wet meetings as invariable (and understandably) riders are just going through the motions to get the match over.

On this occasion this may not have been right call, although I can't to profess to being that close to Kings Lynn, but south of Norwich have had the odd short shower and a good drying wind with plenty of sunshine through the day and a nice calm evening.

Look to be some clear dates later in April where this could be rescheduled too...?

Spot on. As it turned out I expect they could have raced today but one extra meaty shower (which were forecast) would have meant riders and supporters not fancying it and less takings.

The risk is just too great nowadays which is a great shame when you get a lovely evening in the end.

Unless the damage was done from previous days rain, which I don't know, you can't call meetings off on the forecast of showers for me, showers by their very nature are isolated, especially in late March/ early April, you can have a downpour in one area and it be bone dry a mile up the road. This for me is where some kind of (Briggo?) track cover system could be effectively used. I get why clubs postpone based on forecasts of prolonged heavy rain sweeping across the country but not showers. Here in Leicester it was a perfect evening for Speedway but this was also called off yesterday, again I reiterate the damage to the track may already have been done. It's a real shame because it's early in the season, excitement is high and if Peterborough on Monday evening was anything to go by the fans want to get out and see the returning stars ( not the Kings Lynn variety :D) and many clubs could have been expecting one of their largest crowds of the season.

But wouldn't this expected large crowd just roll on to their next match, which is now their 1st match?

I don't know, once the season is underway and injuries start occurring and rider replacement starts his season the impetus is lost. All of the promotional activities saying come to the first match etc. all the work getting press involved and it's all gone because a 10-15 minute shower might hit.

I think Lynn now tend to call off early after the Sheffield debacle in 2021. Once bitten etc

Your probably right there.. With nearly all clubs struggling, any flights, expenses, officials etc that have to be paid for a late call off are saved. It wouldn't take many late call offs to really hurt a clubs finances in this day and age.
