You know you're getting old when you find yourself mumbling "I remember when riders rode through sleet and snow!". Club owners will one day have to come up with some sort of solution to keeping the track dry up until tapes-up. Large sewn-together track-shaped cut tarpauling (four individual segments?) draped across the track from over the top of the air fences and weighted down on the centre green perhaps? They have to do something soon otherwise these milder summers with more rain are ultimately going to kill this sport. 3

Secondly, it doesn't really matter what the weather is like now, if the damage has already been done. As far as covers are concerned, you need volunteers to put them down and take them back up again. Not always possible. Some tracks may not be allowed to put covers down, owing to their landlords not giving permission. Berwick have/had covers, so maybe someone can tell us why they were not used in this instance? Edited April 1, 2023 by StevePark

One day you'll come up with something positive and develop a can do attitude instead of constantly coming up with reasons why things can't be done... be sure to tag me in when you do 1

Maybe the best thing to do would be start the season later and finish it earlier? With the amount of fixtures, should be pretty easy to do.

The meeting being off tonight comes as no surprise giving the weather in Berwick this week. Monday was lovely, since then we have had showers and longer spells of rain each day.
Bellers101
I've been in Berwick since this afternoon and there have only been a few spots of rain. I assume the damage was done earlier in the day/week?

Yes was the reply and around 6pm the fire brigade would arrive and pump the water off the track. Riders would hoy a boiler suit on top of their leathers and we would have ourselves a meeting. In the words of Mary Hopkins, Those were the days my friend. 3

You can bet if next year starts at the end of April we'll have a dry March & first half of April, then a very wet spell as soon as the speedway starts! I once had the pleasure of meeting Mary Hopkins when she attended Shielfield to witness the Bandits take on the Canterbury Crusaders on a rainswept October night in 1977 and she did indeed say that at the time. We all thought she was barmy though.

screm
With the second leg of this fixture set to go ahead this Saturday, the home side will show one change from last weeks home win against Edinburgh. With Nathan Stoneman facing a few weeks out Berwick will bring in Greg Blair for this match and the match up at Glasgow the previous evening.
