Are you differentiating between promoters and directors (shareholders). Glasgow directors include Ian and Johnnie Hoskins (1946- 54) Tommy Miller and Junior Bainbridge (1956) Trevor Redmond, Rob Netcott, (Trevor's father in law) and the Hoskins from 1964. Danny Taylor bought out Redmond and Netcott in 1967 and subsequently sold out to Les Whaley in 1968. The Hoskins sold ahead of the 1972 season to Jimmy Beaton and Neil Macfarlane, while James Wallace bought out Whaley during the 1972 season.

Do I remember correctly was James Wallace a farmer from the Gorebridge area.?Was he ever a sole Promoter?

Yes James Wallace was from Gorebridge and was probably the main mover behind the short  Newtongrange season in 1973. As I remember it, Les Whaley and Ian and Johnnie Hoskins were in charge at the end of 1971, though Johnnie had little or no involvement. The Hoskins sold out to Jimmy Beaton and Neil Macfarlane before the start of the 1972 season, during which Whaley sold his interest to James Wallace. Not sure how long Wallace stayed involved, nor whether guys like Bill Harold and DL Thompson ever had shares in the promotion.

One pair of promoters who have been lost in the mist of time were Cy Melville and Rodney Rycroft. Took over at Oxford for the 1964 season from Dicky Worth and they proceeded to win everything. As an Oxford super fan from 1960-61 it was fantastic. Bringing in Ron How and Jimmy Gooch transformed the team.   It was a great season but they only lasted for that one year after which they went bust, or at least one of them did! It was a brilliant year though.

In 1965 Danny Dunton took over.

Brian, Is Gary Patchett and Graham Drury still involved in speedway?

Graham Drury isn't involved in speedway these days although he is an occasional visitor to Perry Barr. Gary Patchett hasn't beeen seen or heard of for several years now and was banned from Perry Barr by the GRA unless he brought with him a cheque for the money he owed them!!!

Thanks. I assume Tony Mole is also now retired? Graham Drury was a good old school promoter, didn’t Gary Patchett have something to do promoting with Nigel Pearson a while ago, maybe that is why he owed money to GRA?

Regarding James Wallace think he was an Edinburgh fan and I’m sure when Bernie Persson rode for Monarchs he stayed with James. Also think he had a small interest when there was the odd meeting at Motherwell around that time as well as Newtongrange think he put money into the ventures. Also not sure what happened in the end with him

Gary Patchett was one of the promoting consortium in the last year or so of Cradley Heath's tenure at Wolverhampton. He leased Birmingham from Tony Mole for a season but didn't take up the option to buy the promotion outright and departed under a bit of a cloud.

Tony Mole is now retired and is not too well, but still comes to Perry Barr for all of the BRUMMIES home matches and is also a frequent attender at Monmore.

Sad to hear Tony Mole isnt in the best of health, the man's a legend for the tracks he ressurected/kept running over the years
