Mick Doohan Raceway - 96 Raubers Road, Banyo, Brisbane. Probably not the venue you are referring to, but there is a meeting here on the 11th March, from 1pm. Darcy Ward seems to be attached to the promotion. I won't be going!

I think you'll find Darcy Ward has the full promotional speedway rights at the Mick Doohan!!

Also with the demise of Discovery Sports Events MD Monsieur Ribeiro, if there is to be another SGP in Australia it is likely to be at one of the permanent tracks, with added seating!! (Speedway Star 24/02.23)

Is it still possible to hold speedway at this famous venue?

The track is still there, but I’ve heard it’s expensive to hire & the noise could be a problem. Which I think is a joke.. there’s more traffic noise then ever going past the hospital, which where 1 of the main complainers back in the day..

Didn't they use to have to run extra large silencers there? Huge great cans...

I seem to recall seeing some photos (Billy Sanders?) with the extra large silencer during a Test Match at that venue?

I lived nearby for a while. Think the main issue is that a lot of high-rise apartments have gone up around the Ekka and the area has become quite residential.

As you say, the track is still there although I don't think there's much if any neutral zone and there's lighting columns and other immoveable paraphernalia right next to the boarding. Think it would be quite expensive to put in a track that's up to modern standards, and would the South-East Queensland fanbase these days justify it?

The Gabba is also going to be redeveloped for the Olympics, so there's talk that the Ekka will be re-developed to house the Brisbane Lions AFL team which will probably put the final nail in the coffin.

The New Cross-River Rail is going to be going right past the Ekka so there will be umpteen trains an hour squealing through the neighbourhood, so would be a bit ridiculous to complain about the noise from speedway.

I think the crowd would b massive. Went there a few years ago for a Troy Bayliss motorcycle expo & Crumpy put on a display & the crowd went nuts.. it would b awesome, but I very much doubt we will see racing back there.. would love to be wrong, I’d head back, I fly down for sprintcars at Archerfield..

A Speedway Grand Prix at the EKKA would be just awesome.

The Brisbane Exhibition Ground is an iconic venue for the sport, running there since nearly a Century ago, for the first speedway meeting at the EKKA was held in 1926 !!!

I found this video on YouTube, it's the final round of the 1997 International Speedway Masters Series at the EKKA. This probably is as close at it gets to a Speedway Grand Prix. If DISCOVERY really want to get the SGP going again in Australia, the Brisbane Exhibition Ground Stadium would be a phantastic venue. Sadly DISCOVERY seems to lack such vision.

There was no better place to watch speedway then the EKKA, many a night 1 would leave the ekka & would have to buy the newspaper on Monday to see who won on Saturday night.. I don’t know if they still do, but when the Brisbane Show was on, they use to have speedway demonstrations, I’m talking a few few years ago now. I left there 17 years ago..

This recently taken picture illustrates how breathtakingly beautiful that historic speedway venue still is.

Since 2003 the Brisbane Exhibition Grounds is a registrated Queensland heritage site.

Ist möglicherweise ein Bild von außen

It is a lovely venue.

A few years I cycled my bike around the track on Boxing Day just to say I'd 'ridden' it. You could just walk in - no-one was there. :approve:
