Because it is primarily a competition for stand alone teams, of which there are only three.

Doesn’t really make lot of sense given the lack of fixtures this season, also considering it was the reason that the fixture list was cut back to suit Teams in NDL and Championship.(if that was the real reason alleged)

Totally to do with the standalone clubs wanting more fixtures. Ideally there should be a National Trophy for standalone teams, but with Workington being so far away from Mildenhall & Kent, doesn't suit the league geographically.

If all 8 teams were entered stand-alone teams would get an extra fixture as an extra round would be required.

Not necessarily, if the stand alone clubs all lost their first match (assuming they didn't race each other) they wouldn't get any extra matches!

If all 8 teams were entered, all 8 would have an extra fixture, which is defeating the object.   The idea is to give stand-alone teams extra fixtures which they need to fill out their season.

Could they not have run it as a national trophy format (therefore all teams would get 3 extra fixtures whereas at least one team will only get one extra fixture).

Workington could possibly invite Edinburgh and Berwick over for a 3 team tournament to add to their fixtures if the wanted?
