The captain for the night is not even in the team, guest for him

Berwick once again leading the way with riderless captains.

Great to see the Bullets copying the Bandits in away meetings, great to see.

Certainly hard not to question certain riders commitments to the team. If you take a NL place then away trips south are part of it and the fact that riders can get away with not travelling for dubious reasons is insulting to those who are committed and are more deserving of the team spot.

A message from Jamie & Scott Courtney.
There can be no hiding from the fact that 2023 has been our toughest season on track in recent memory. An almost constant flow of injuries throughout both the Bullets and Bandits sides have contributed to a lack of consistency on track and whenever there has been a glimmer of hope it has been swiftly followed by another heavy blow.
As a club, the wellbeing of our community and riders is top priority and to see so many lads from both of our sides get severely banged up really does have an effect on the morale of everyone involved with Berwick Speedway.
A sporadic fixture list, inconsistent weather, lack of rider availability and probably the toughest economic climate to run a Speedway club ever, has led us to ask ourselves all of the big questions……
The reality is that Berwick Speedway has always been more than just a team that enters a league year in year out. Berwick Speedway is bigger and more valuable to the sport than we are all probably feeling right now.
The club has always shown great resilience through the toughest of times since the Taylor family founded Berwick Speedway back in 1968 and it’s time to dig deep once again!
Moving forward we are delighted to announce that we will be leaning on our strength and resilience to bounce back from adversity and we will walk into 2024 with our heads held high.
As per every year, plans for the following season both within the club and at BSP level begin around July/August time and 2023 has provided us with our most challenging season on track but we are ready to regroup, rebuild, recharge and go again.
Bringing the fans, sponsors and supporters of Berwick Speedway the best possible version of the club in 2024 is our top priority and we are well underway with plans to improve in all areas we can.
On Saturday September the 16th we will mark the end of a short but explosive era for the Berwick Bullets.
After 3 seasons of competing in the National League, the club will be taking a break from that level of competition.
The Bullets have been almost entirely self funded by the club owners and after an incredibly demanding season on and off the track, your promotion have made the decision to channel their attention towards the Bandits and a revamped youth system.
The Bullets brand will continue at youth level and will be associated with the purpose built Grant Henderson Tankers training academy at Duns.
We look forward to our remaining fixtures and will continue to do our very best for the club in 2023 and beyond!

Great to see positive vibes for 2024 after such a torrid season on track in 2023.

Great news re Bandits and ongoing Acadeny

Sad re Bullets but entirely understandable on economic grounds.

Second teams for Clubs may become an unaffordable luxury if they can't break even in their own right.

A lot will depend on what structure is for 2024 as its hard to see 3 tiers.

More likely tiers of around 7 clubs each if we lose Wolves, Peterborough as already confirmed. Hopefully likes of Edinburgh, , Poole Birmingham, can find medium and longer term security of tenure or like Wolves new stadia.

Also new Owners at KL and Leicester can be found as up for sale allegedly

It makes total sense to do what keeps the club as a whole alive, dropping out of the NL doesn't mean they are moving away from developing new riders, can still take part in the NJL for example.

But I do question mentioning a "sporadic fixtures list" as part of the issue, they've ridden several double headers, often with two separate opposition teams, whose fans would likely have no interest in paying extra to watch their own team. If they wanted a more complete fixture list, don't run double headers.

If any more teams drop out of the top two leagues then they absolutely have to merge. Seven team leagues are pointless, especially if everyone and their dog gets a crack at the play-offs.

Berwick have made a sensible decision here. No point in the club going out of business trying to sustain the Bullets as an NL side.

I suspect that comes back to another part of the family Courtney quote - "lack of rider availability".

Arranging meetings must be a complete nightmare nowadays, especially at weekends when all sorts of competitions take place (in UK and abroad).

Therefore, in a bid to have as many of the declared 1-7's of both sides on show, perhaps double headers are the only 'solution'. Beyond that, you're looking at one / both side(s) filled with r/r and guests.

I remember when I travelled to every meeting, home and away, religiously (Monarchs and Devils). I said to one of the guys then that British Speedway was dying. That must've been 2009 or earlier. Here we are in 2023 and the sport is, somehow, just about clinging on to dear life. Sadly, each passing year sees another nail, small or large, drilled firmly into the coffin :(
