I got the impression from the announcer it only went ahead as the kids just wanted to race. They gave it a good stab as well, unfortunately the constant drizzle and rain finished it off. No tannoy on bend one though, first time I've stood there and you can't hear anything.

Lads were not given the option prior to heat one it was photo and get on with it . Two minutes came on and away they went. Personally think it was the wrong decision as the rain was constant the meeting was never going to finish especially on a 20 heat format where riders have back to back races at heat 4 8 12 and 16 . After heat 4 some wanted to continue others didn't but personally think it was right to stop. Think the sport dodged a bad press bullet yesterday if one rider got hurt riding an unfit track the neigh sayers would be having a field day

From B'ham forum...new averages from July 1st gives us 4.78 for a replacement for the injured J.T (out for 6 weeks and not likely to make much of an impact on return, based on previous performances...)

Paul Starke on 4.44 ???

I make it 4.73 available for Joe T. Either way Starke has a 4.86 ave so doesn't fit.

Is it worth giving Max Clegg a shot, likely to score better at reserve, especially now he has NL racing. Either that or you're looking at giving Jake Turner a go?

If Max Clegg is signed, Joe Thompson could be forgiven for thinking, "You couldn't make this up". Joe was released by Scunthorpe (against their own wishes, if we believe the reports ) in a move that brought Max Clegg into the team. Max was then subsequently released, rather quickly, to bring Drew Kemp into the side. Now you're saying that he's a possible replacement for Joe again.

Don't worry Joe. That's racing. Yeh, right.

Or, could there be a double change, with both Thompsons being dropped?

It's about time the young kids got protection from being dropped all the time, then bringing in older journey men who have not made the grade all these seasons!!

How about having a rising star at No 7 all year, and a under 24 brit at 6, and another under 24 brit in the team, bit similar to what Poland do

Can't see why they would look to replace Dan, he's hardly ridden a match for Birmingham, so not had much of a chance to prove himself.

Not saying it's something I'd do/agree with, but just looking at options and if there's not a suitable replacement for J.T, then the manager would have no choice but to look at other avenues.

If they were to replace Dan, it would be to fit in a rider (who?) with a higher average. But then they would have to replace Joe with a lower average: but they already have one 2-point rider (Sam Hagon), which wouldn't work. Dan at least deserves a good run in the team.

Personally I'd go with Max Clegg, as he showed at Leicester last year his scoring picked up when he dropped to reserve, which could even lead to Bowtell or Dan dropping to reserve. Especially as they have an away match at Edinburgh to re-arrange. If he doesn't improve on his Scunny form, bring back in Joe T (in time for Berwick away - where Clegg would score a 0).

Clegg rides well at PB....but I'd go with Starke if he fits.

I'd like to see Dan given a chance, but he's a Championship reserve at best, atm..... IMO!

Not sure I can see J.T coming back in to the team....he doesn't quite have it....I think Hagon is a stronger prospect (more bottle...)

If the Thompson’s were both taken out of the team and another 2.00 rider brought in (weakens reserves I know) what average would be left for a new rider in the top 5? Got to be around the 8 point mark?  That could open up some doors surely to go for a really top heavy side to compensate for 2 x 2.00 at reserve

But from what I'm reading Birmingham are struggling to get a crowd and lost money last year  who is gonna pay for a 7.5 rider ?? The team was built to a budget to survive,  now due to fans not supporting the team, now appears some supporters want to break the bank again !!

When I have been to Birmingham, it was noticeable how large a percentage of the crowd "wore the club shop"..

Not large crowds in total, granted..

But it does suggest that a losing team could impact attendances quite a bit % wise if those fans in particular became disillusioned....

Many tracks have a fair % of fans who can just go along to watch the racing which can help them during a poor run of performances, as they turn up anyway..

It was also noticeable the age demographic of those in attendance proudly wearing their yellow and red, and, sadly, there will be other reasons as to their less regular visits too I would think as the years have gone by and continue to do so..

Certainly the "oldest" crowd I have seen at Speedway...

Although a few will run them close....;)

It does certainly seem like it has been a "hard sell" for all Birmingham Promoters after the "honeymoon period" ended after a few years of their return..

You cannot knock those currently in charge for their efforts though can you?
