CHAMPIONSHIP PLANS FOR ’23

This is a question not a statement.

is it only league matches that count towards riders averages?

why I ask? from dropping the 2 home 2 away fixtures where riders would’ve had 32 meetings count to there averages and a  possible 6 KO cup meetings and 4 playoff meetings that wouldn’t have counted.

Now with the league format of 16 league meetings that count to averages and those that don’t would be as follows 6 KO cup meetings ,8 jubilee part II meetings and 6 playoff meetings.

that would mean 16 league matches that would affect your employability for 2024 and potentially 20 matches where you can score as many points as you can but will have zero affect on you future employability.

Yes. KO Cup, "any" Trophy and Play-offs don't count.

Averages are currently only on last 10 league matches anyway so whether there is 16, 32 or any other number it wouldn’t make a huge difference as it’s last 10 anyway

100% makes a difference, you know that if you can stay under a 5 average or under a 8 average your far more employable the following season.

once the team is through to the playoffs and let’s be honest you’ll know if you’ve secured your spot in June, you take the foot (or wrist) off the gas get your average where you like it, then “find form again” for the cups and playoffs.

if they had opted for the 32 league matches with only 4 playoff spots, the team would need you to perform at your best for the entirety of the season and then only 6 KO matches and 4 playoff matches would not affect your average at the very end.

You seem to forget that riders get paid in the main for scoring points not lowering their average!

I would say if anything it’s actually the other way though as every match matters more when you only have 16 to qualify for the playoffs rather than 32. With 32 matches a team could know it’s as good as in the playoffs 22 matches in and ride to a minimum effort the last 10 (your 4 in the playoffs was never confirmed as part of the 2h 2a it more than likely would still have been 6)

Your telling me that not a single rider looks to next years employment opportunities??

Would Poole have kept Zach Cook on a 7+ average if his last 10 meetings counted ??

look at all the current  riders sitting on high 5’s and Low 7’s next year and let’s see where they end up.

If averages were taken from the last 10 of ALL fixtures, then I reckon the team building average for 2023 would not be 40 points!

Until such time as we get riders coming into championship who aspire and are happy to ride as semi professional/ part time riders attached to just one club in the Championship then there will continue to be a rider shortage.  Every rider interviewed in the Speedway Star from the raw rookie of 15 years old is now looking to be an SGP champion. if they cont make it in 3 years they retire from speedway and go grasstracking.

Seem everyone now has to aspire to be a future SGP rider with a massive sponsored van, a team of mechanics, a stable of several bikes and unsurprisingly demand a pay packet to support all these overheads.  Maybe this is a product of the drive to see every rider in the team to increase their CMA. having a steady second string in your team just isn't good enough anymore.

Apparently, contracts - even in the NL - specify that a rider has to have two bikes and a van.
