I'm talking about those "representing" Wimbledon, not guests. In those days, each team would have one or two main replacements, but of course, there were still odd teams who got through a bunch of riders. Thing is, people complain about riders doubling up these days, but the reality is that we've always had them. What we DIDN'T have was more guests than actual team members. The fact is, unless a rider was legitimately injured - he would ride for your team (unless he was Swedish)! A cursory glance at the British Speedway Handbook shows guests (as opposed to junior replacements) were only used sparingly, with 8 teams not using them at all. Wimbledon's stats show Maidment and Tebby being ever present and Hedge and Everett only missing 1 match each. Bobby Dugard missed 3 whilst Ronnie missed 10 and Reg Luckhurst (who suffered a broken leg) missed 16. Pete Murray notched up 16 so did most of the cover with the 8 guest appearances and, presumably, RR doing the rest. Of the other team's guests were used very sparingly apart from Newcastle who relied on one all season to bolster their undermanned team and also the Hammers who suffered badly with injury. For my team Cradley, even Bernie, who later in his Heathens career seemed to be absent more than he was present, only missed 7 league matches and if memory serves some of those were due to injury rather than Swedish commitments. It certainly was different times...

Including Wolves, who were without Norman Hunter for half of the season. Other than when they used a Div 2 rider, they used R/R. 1 hour ago, salty said: A cursory glance at the British Speedway Handbook shows guests (as opposed to junior replacements) were only used sparingly, with 8 teams not using them at all. Let's not forget that Hedge, Luckhurst, Dugard, and Tebby were very much the basis of our team for years. From 1965 to 1968 they were joined by Olle Nygren, until Ronnie and Maido replaced him. A REAL team.... Edited November 21, 2022 by chunky
steve roberts
When Oxford conquered all in 1964 (National League & Trophy) they only used eight riders. Ron How, Jimmy Gooch, Arne Pander, Colin Gooddy and Eddie Reeves were ever present while Jack Geran and Jon Bishop missed only one match and Ronnie Genz three. There were eight-man teams in 1964 in the National League. Olle Nygren, Reg Luckhurst, Bob Andrews and Ted Ede guested for Oxford once each. Danny Dunton also rode in one meeting. In the Britannia Shield matches Colin McKee appeared 7 times and Danny Dunton once, with Barry Briggs and Olle Nygren guesting one each.
