Apparently Sam "forgot" to take the test before he left the stadium... but offered to take one the next morning after he'd remembered

Yes, it was a rather haphazard process in those days.  Done during or after a meeting and very easy to "forget" to do the test before getting in the van and driving home.

These days once everyone has signed into the meeting declaring themselves fit to ride, the external company appear, randomly choose 4 riders, and you do the test before you can ride.  Happened to a rider I was helping a few years ago.  He'd only just had a pee and missed the team track-walk as he was struggling to go again.  The drug tester was a huge scary woman who you wouldn't argue with!

Sam Ermolenko apparently according to the Speedway Tavern podcast he missed a drug test at a test match at Hackney back around 1987 and was suspended until it was overturned on appeal

Only in Speedway :D

The fact is...he's banned from riding.....that doesn't happen unless you're guilty of a misdemeanour!

He has been suspended  for refusing to take a test (or failing to provide a complete test) the 30 day suspension is an automatic punishment for doing so. Further punishment may or may not be forthcoming based on the findings of any subsequent hearing(s)

In the history of the sport, has there been any rider that's received a ban and then had it over turned due to proving their innocence?

Yes, he got a 30 day ban, but we don't know the facts regarding what happened when he was asked to take the test and if ,for example, procedures were followed correctly. I think Stewart Dickson said he had employed a solicitor for the hearing, so Morris may think there are reasons to challenge it.

Sounds like someone you'd let take the piss!

  • The more guilty you are, the more you need a solicitor, so I wouldn't read too much into that. -_-

Attendees for such hearings are “strongly advised” in writing to be accompanied by legal representation as matters arising can have legally enforceable outcomes. Similarly legal advocates are aware of what is and isn’t admissible in such cases

Big shock to read that the Bates Family have decided to leave Leicester at end of the season.

Marc claims due to health issues and time involved and although I'd always associated Damian with Leicester it seems he can't run both and the family business.

Looking for some one more local to take it on.

They have pumped big sums in over the years since there to keep it open and doubt that without that constant investment its ever been genuinely self sufficient.

No idea having not been this year if the Crowds have increased wnough to sustain PL as opposed to CL but they always paid top dollar in CL and lost money doing so.

Damian also in Star explaining increasing issues at Owlerton in finding suitable dates as more going on there now like drive in Cinema and also some issues with an adjacent business and noise issues if speedway runs.

Worrying times for Leicester for sure.

Easy to criticise Bates Brothers on occasions but they have always put their money where their mouths are and supported 2 Clubs who otherwise may not be around.

First initial thoughts. Worrying times for my club and I didn't see this coming. Let's hope a buyer is sorted. I stand with Dave Helmsley near enough every week and he's still passionate about the club so maybe he can pull a few strings and get a few parties interested. From the statement it sounds like the club on/off the track is doing fine which may encourage a new buyer. I don't think it's making huge sums of money but I think it's certainly manageable compared to other clubs. I kind of have mixed feelings on the whole situation really. I don't really know what to make of it. It says it's down to health reasons and if so it's the right call and health comes first. But it just seems odd to me.

The questions I have in my head right are ones I will have to be patient with.

Is there more to this than meets the eye?

Is it current state of British speedway played a factor that's encouraged this decision?

Has the change of race night cost the club money?

Who is interested in buying the club ?

Are we about to lose another club ?

What can the supporters do to help?

If any people inside the club that are on this forum please let us know of anything we can do to support the lions.

And no I'm not going to buy the club even though I think about every day if I won the euro millions!

It’s good to hear a club such as Leicester is a viable business as most on here fear the opposite. Their team is as expensive as others and their crowds are on a par with the rest with similar sponsorship income. Perhaps we now need to be more optimistic about the top league going forward.

Hopefully the new owners will be more local and take more of a proactive attitude in actually actively promoting the club to the local community.

While the Bates have brought success to the club, the club did nothing with it in terms of promotion and once the title was won in 2019 it was barely mentioned again, then of course there was the debacle of last years final.

Let's hope that the Bates can go out on a high with victory in the Jubilee Trophy!

Err I think Covid had something to do with the league win not being mentioned.

I've been down to Leicester a few times when Glasgow have been down and it seemed like a cracking club with great fans.

I have noticed on the meetings that have been shown on Eurosport and BSN that the crowds have been far far less than what I've seen in person.

On the "is there more than meets the eye" part, there always is, people don't sell profitable business' unless their heading off into the sunset on the profit they've made.

Secondly, how many successful businesses with "interested parties" advertise on their club page with contact details for any other interested parties looking to buying the club.

Lastly I hope to goodness that this isn't another club going to the wall.

Er I think we were still reigning champions when racing resumed in 2021

I'm glad you agree it wasn't mentioned though :)

I missed the title winning season and since coming back someone had to tell me we  won something. Be nice if it was displayed in some way

Don't mention the title win... I mentioned it once but I think I got away with it :D
