Sheffield speedway appears to be no longer fit for purpose

Constant track and stadium issues and never able to deal with the slightest of set backs

Time to pull out of the league and leave it to the clubs that can organise themselves satisfactorily

There'll be about 5 clubs in the entire sport if you're trying to imply owlerton isn't fit for purpose anymore...

With at least seven more home fixtures to fit in (with uncertain weather conditions in September and October and four Mondays/Thursdays already ruled out after 25 August for away fixtures) the Tigers' season is now bound to spill over into November. Wonder how the stadium will cope with fog and ice.

Premiership teams should drop the Mon/Thurs 'priority ' days and allow those teams that rent or share their stadia with other sports to run on days that are most suited,

Alternatively Sheffield should step back up to the Championship!!:D

I think that’s the way the sport is heading. We are not the only team to cancel meetings prematurely. Supporters will find other things to do. I can understand the promotion not wanting a poor race track due to weather conditions but usually after a few races the track settles down and the racing improves. At the end of the day it’s the promotors decision and it’s them who lose money. In the long run it could be more damaging for the club.

I thought Thursday is the day that Sheffield like riding on anyway!!

My understanding (from track staff posts elsewhere) is that we don’t get access to the track until the dogs finish at around 5.30pm. Simply not enough time to get the track fit for racing.

if they half arse the preparation and the racing is rubbish or a rider gets injured, the promotion get slated. Just look at the fall out from Cardiff and the number of people vowing to never go back.

Fairly sure that the decision won’t have been taken lightly, the income from a local derby would be much appreciated after the number of rain offs etc

So if it was 30 degrees they would only get 2 hours before the meeting to water the track? not sure I believe that. Last dog race was 1.59pm so what happens between then and 5.30pm then?

Playoffs due to start 26 September so they got 4 weeks.

Supporters have already found other things to do...

I would say approximately 20,000 of them since 2000 or so....

When circa 40,000 a week would attend, now it's around 20,000 tops I would say...

Doesnt help itself in any way shape or form by its Mickey Mouse rules and administration...

Nor does its self policing do it any favours...

Then you add in all the adhoc call offs due to all sorts of wide and various reasons, which often make no sense to fans who often will also suspect 'other motives' given it isn't unusual to have 'strange occurrences' happen on nights when star riders may fail to turn up or get injured the night before elsewhere...

It simply reaps what it sows..

Hence the harvest is poor year after year...

When will the famine hit? I suppose is the big question...

Sheffield must be after Stoke’s record for regularity of call offs.

I seem to recall BV had the book thrown at them for a dodgy call off v Poole some years ago. If memory serves me correctly they were no longer allowed to call off meetings themselves. Surely Sheffield (and others) need more scrutiny as these situations continue to do untold damage to a sport already on its knees.

For the second week on the trot I'm explaining to the grandkids that the match is rained off... while basking in 20 degree bright sunshine. The lawn outside my house (which is prone to turning to a quagmire after even just a moderate rainfall) is dry and firm. I find it hard to believe that Owlerton (three miles away) is any different. Something is very wrong at Sheffield Speedway. Whether it's the track or the people who run it is a mystery but, for a sport which hopes to attract a new generation of followers, a single meeting in the entire six-week kids' summer holiday is an opportunity wasted. My grandkids have lost interest and I'm starting to feel that way too.

I have to agree with your comments and view of the situation at Sheffield Speedway. With the way things currently stand, I and it appears quite a few others on here would have thought that the Sheffield Promotion would have busted a gut to try and get tonights meeting on. All the riders are in the country - aren't they? Yes the weather was a little wet yesterday and this morning. However we are in the middle of the worst drought since 1976, so the rain quickly disappeared from every where else in Sheffield, apart from Owlerton. There were obviously individuals in the know (apparently), who knew the meeting was off quite a time (perhaps an hour or more) before anything was formally announced in the public domain. Also why would agree to your landlord closing you down at your busiest time of year to make improvements to other parts of the stadium. If it was so important and essential why wasn't it done in April or May? And why would the contractors making these improvements damage other existing fixtures without repairing them before leaving ?

It's all quite strange isn't it. I can't remember a season which has been so interrupted as this one. There is nothing you can do about the weather, although Neil Machin used to try and get every meeting on, sometimes when it was obvious it wasn't going to happen, but today wasn't one of those was it? The air fence fiasco couldn't be helped and was made to look worse because it was on live TV. The starting gate issue against Peterborough shouldn't have happened as that should be checked and sorted well in advance of start time, electrician on site?

As a season holder I've paid in advance for something that its looking like I'm not going to get. I'm going away in October for two weeks so I hope it pi$$es it down in England for those weeks and I might just get to see some speedway that I've paid for. Mind you if it's on TV they'll probably try and ride the meetings!

The only available date to fit in the re-run of tonight's rained off meeting with Belle Vue is Monday 19th September. Failing that, Sheffield will have to stage double-headers to meet the deadline. Any more rain-offs will mean we're stuffed. After the cut-off date we will still need to stage the League Trophy final with Kings Lynn, the rained off pairs event from last week and whatever play-offs we qualify for. It makes all the three-week breaks throughout the season look rather stupid.

Someone did say there is rumour that the British Final is to be restaged on that date.

Last dog race at Monmore is at 6pm we still get meetings on.
