Brings back memories. The one thing I had forgotten was the terrible music !!!

Believe me it was better than having to endure Peter Yorks's constant ramblings at Cowley!

Thse few seasons under Russell Lanning were immensely enjoyable. A proper promotion in the true sense of the word and a real sense of a meeting being properly presented. Dave Lanning was excellent.

We had Dave Lanning for one year at Cowley and he certainly livened up proceedings!

100% agree. It was refreshing to see Wimbledon promoted in such a fashion after the years of under investment from the GRA and Jimmy James.

If only we could have got Jeremy Doncaster for the 1990 BL campaign…

Yep, iris123 and have often said on here how they breathed new life into us. What a great spell that was...

Absolutely !!

I mean just watching the video yesterday and hearing Blazeaway, the tingle down the spine at that anyway

Was no great fan of Dave Lanning, at least as a speedway tv commentator, and looking back at some of his old speedway star columns, they were a bit painful to read. But I think he was in his element as the stadium announcer. Both the Lanning's added something very much lacking at Plough Lane in the previous years.

But the drop down in 1985 I think was a memorable period for me. The local rivalries and the riders we ended up having. Ferreira, Jamie, Stingray, Todd and of course Roger, plus many decent supporting riders

I loved it, whilst trying to block out the feel it was all coming to an end, with the closing off of a large part of the stadium. Think looking back with a pooor memory, wasn't there one at least scare that we were closing a season or two before we did ?

Iris123, you’re absolutely correct to point out that the Dons were very near to closing down on a couple of occasions before the eventual closure in June 1991.

At the end of the 1986 season, the GRA announced that without significant team sponsorship (six figures!) that speedway would cease to run at Plough Lane.

Fortunately for us Dons fans, a group of businessmen formed a consortium in January 1987 and managed to get the support of the legendary John Berry to act as designated Promoter.

This led on 12 months later to the arrival of Dave and Russell Lanning, the advent of the Wimbledon Experience and the joy of a young vibrant team.

Happy times indeed for me when I was 18-19!

Always thought it a pity one of the top speedway journalists associated with Wimbledon never done a book on the subject. Must be some great stories to tell. Sadly Phil Rising never contributed much on here, nor as far as I know any articles on his years at Plough Lane ?
