Road closures and travel advice for events taking place in Cardiff on Saturday, August 13

Speedway will be taking place at Principality Stadium; Cardiff City Football Club will be taking on Birmingham City at Cardiff City Stadium and The Welsh Fire will be playing Birmingham Phoenix as part of the Women’s and Men’s ‘Hundred Series’ at Sophia Gardens Cricket Ground.

➡️➡️➡️ Road closures
Road closures will be put in place at the end of the Cardiff City game between 1.45pm and 3pm on Sloper Road, from Bessemer Road to Leckwith Road and on Leckwith Road, between Sloper Road and Wellington Street.

The first cricket match at Sophia Gardens will start at 2.30pm, with the second match starting at 6pm. To facilitate these events, Sophia Close will be closed between 4pm and 10pm.

With the gates of the Principality Stadium opening at 3.30pm for Speedway and the event scheduled to finish at 8.30pm, Westgate Street will be closed in its entirety between 3pm and 9.30pm.

Access to the Civic Centre will be controlled throughout the day, with access allowed only for event parking; access to the Speedway Fanzone; limited commuter parking, loading and access to private car parks.
Roads affected include King Edward VII Avenue, Museum Avenue, City Hall Road, College Road and Gorsedd Gardens Road.

➡️➡️➡️Trains
There will be widespread disruption to the rail network on Saturday August 13 due to industrial action by the train drivers’ union ASLEF.
Transport for Wales (TfW) is not involved in the dispute with ASLEF, but their services are expected to be extremely busy as Great Western Railways (GWR), West Midlands Trains, Avanti West Coast and Cross-country are not operating any services at all on Saturday August 13.

TfW is advising people to only travel by rail if their journey is essential on the South Wales Main Line between Carmarthen and Newport and between Cardiff and Lydney.

Please plan ahead and check full timetables (available from 9 August) on the TfW website and online journey planners before you travel. Where services are running, they may be subject to late-notice changes.

➡️➡️➡️ Civic Centre Event Day Parking
Getting there: Exit Junction 32 of the M4, head south on the A470 towards the city centre and follow signage to the civic centre.
Cost: £15 payable on the day at the car park – card payments are also now available.
Parking time: The car park will open at 8am and closes at 12 Midnight.
Civic Centre Event Day Parking (Coaches)
Cost: £25 payable on the day (cash only)
Parking time: The car park will open at 8am and closes at 12 Midnight.

➡️➡️➡️ Park & Ride facilities for the cricket and Speedway
The event park and ride facility for these events will be at County Hall car Park in Cardiff Bay, with the drop off and pick up at Callaghan Square.
The facility is easily accessible via the M4, leaving at junction 33, and travelling down the link road (A4232).
Buses will be running to and from the city centre every 10 minutes. before the concerts begin. Cost: £10 payable on the day – card payments are now available.
The car park opens at 9.00am and the first bus will leave at 9.30am. The last bus from the city centre will be at 10pm and the car park will close at 10.30pm.

➡️➡️➡️ Event Day Parking at Sophia Gardens
Sophia Gardens (cars)

Sophia Gardens Event Day Parking

Cost: £15 payable on the day at the car park – card payments are now available.
Parking time: Car park opens at 8.00am and closes at 12 midnight
Please note:  All vehicles are left on site at the owner's risk. Cardiff Council will not be held responsible for any theft or damage to motor vehicles or personal possessions. Any vehicles left in the car park after closing time will be fined.

➡️➡️➡️ Bus
Local buses:
Bus services will be diverted while the city centre road closures are in place
Please visit the relevant bus operator's website for more information about your specific bus routes.
For Stagecoach services, please visit: Welcome to Stagecoach (https://orlo.uk/mzbsN)
For Cardiff Bus services, please visit: https://orlo.uk/gg1oh
For NAT services, please visit: https://orlo.uk/D2VCl
National Express:

National Express coaches will use Sophia Gardens as usual.

➡️➡️➡️ Can you cycle or walk?
Those who live locally in Cardiff may want to travel by bicycle or walk. Research shows us that 52% of car trips made in the Welsh capital are less than 5km. This is a distance that can be comfortably cycled in 20 minutes.
We also know that 28% of Cardiff residents who currently do not cycle would like to do so.
When the roads are congested this makes cycling an even more attractive option as travel by bicycle would be quicker than a car during rush hours or during big events.

➡️➡️➡️ Shopping Parking
Shoppers are advised to make use of the dedicated Shopping Park & Ride sites at Pentwyn or County Hall. Or city centre car parks are also available: North Road Car Parks, St David's Shopping Centre, John Lewis, Capitol Shopping Centre, and NCP (Adam Street, Dumfries Place and Greyfriars Road.)

➡️➡️➡️ Disabled parking
Disabled drivers are advised to use Sophia Gardens. Disabled parking is also available at various private car parks.
Please check individual websites for availability.

➡️➡️➡️ Taxis
St Mary Street taxi rank (outside the House of Fraser) will not be affected by these events.

Cardiff City are home to Birmingham. It's a lunchtime kick off but the city is normally busy after football with post match drinkies etc. I've also read that there is cricket. The Welsh Fire against oval invincibles in the hundred, whatever that is? There's also a couple of events and an evening concert at Cardiff castle apparently.

Bloody stupid, having the GP in the football season IMO.  I'm going to miss this one as I'll be at the Etihad watching Bournemouth get battered.

I'd rather go to speedway to be honest but it's my grandson's first (and probably only)  Premier League season and he wouldn't forgive me if I didn't take him :(

We got ours from Seetickets online with our email address but although we did that and they had our email we also had to also register a separate account with the same email with Seetickets,  the tickets then showed in  the Seetickets account then we had to download them to the app (sorry if that's not clear I find it difficult to explain)  we all seem to be having problems with this stupid app.  Try registering a Seetickets account to see if your tickets are there, if not phone stadium on Monday.  We're taking printed copy of our confirmation email with us just incase of further problems.

iv down loaded seetickets  ,,, but it dont work  ,,,,just a  round figure in middle of phone changing colour,,,,, this will be fun saturday.

Can't help but think that if they told you what was going on months in advance regarding other events, celebraties attending etc, that fans could be attracted long ago rather than 4 days before the event and nobody really knows anything.

But then again, it wouldn't be speedway would it...

I hope the crowd holds up this year , I’ve just got a feeling it will be noticeably down, I just don’t see or feel the buzz around speedway for it and everyone seems to say no I’ll watch it on TV , I do feel it’s time for a change of venue, maybe up in the north east somewhere ,anything to get that buzz back

Silverstone only attracted 41,000 for Sundays MotoGP/2/3, down from about 80,000 last year. A few weeks earlier F1 got a full house. So bike racing crowd was down, down a lot. The racing is close, so is it the “Valentino Rossi retired syndrome” or something else. £90 entry on Sunday + £30 parking….. could be a put off, but it’s never cheap at MotoGP races. Maybe public are bracing themselves for the energy price rises coming in the next few months. So will be interesting what the crowds are like at Cardiff.  Maybe speedway missed the opportunity to attract a younger generation some 20-30 years ago. That generation would now have kids of there own to bring along, but seems that the chance was missed or mis-managed.

To the Dean Machine….. where in the north east would you suggest is capable of holding a GP, taking into account the costs, venue suitability and anticipated crowd needed.

Lack of a Brit to support didn't help matters.

Apart from the roof most football stadiums could be used, the track is on a false floor in Cardiff and other venues like Warsaw so putting a track in shouldn’t be an issue, if willing let’s say Newcastle United , to hire the stadium will surely be the same or even less than cardiff , nitro circus is at a stadium in Glasgow, if the stadium has a full size football pitch then it’s big enough for speedway
