While there used to be around 200 active riders and the Russian national championship was held in four qualifying rounds with a total of 72 riders, today there are two semi-finals with 36 riders, plus two handfuls of juniors. While in Western Europe, with the exception of Scandinavia, exactly one ice race was held in the last 24 months due to the official corona bans (Berlin 2020), the races and the active clubs in Russia are also decreasing: This year there was only one World Cup run nor Togliatti, the former stronghold of Shadrinsk has been on the back burner since the death of the stadium manager and due to financial problems. It is no longer possible to drive in Kransnogorsk and Saransk, Kamensk-Uralskij and Ufa only hold national races. Even with the previous croesus of track sports in Russia, Mega Lada Togliatti, the trees no longer seem to grow into the sky: in the 15,000-seat Anatoli-Stepanov Stadium, hardly more than 3,000 fans strayed to the two World Cup races at the weekend.
