bigcatdiary
Terrible news, Phil was a lovely man and was a real supporter of speedway in general. Very easy to talk too and an excellent communicator. Condolences to his family and to friends and staff at the star who will really miss his input.

heathen52
RIP Mr Rising i never met him but as a young man i always looked forward to reading the Speedway Star every week, he along with everyone at the Speedway Star did a great job promoting the Sport throughout the UK and elsewhere, he will be missed and was a person that it will be difficult if not impossible to replace, make no mistake the Sport will be poorer for his passing, I just hope the powers that be remember him in a way a man of his standing deserves, God rest his soul. DutchGrasstrack
Very sad news! Phil helped me to get started as photographer at the GP's around 10 years ago, and also with my first publications in the Star. Great to talk with him. Always friendly. RIP my friend. Sidney the robin
The Speedway star kept on going through some really tough times but Philip had the vision to keep on track. The longevity of that magazine is outstanding, a great tribute to Philip and his hard work and having great staff with him at the speedway star. The biggest thing for me was he always listened and always wanted to move the magazine forward. He will be a huge loss to speedway and he for for me was in the John Berry mould , people had huge respect for him but he had his own view as well.RIP Philip. fatface
Very sorry to hear that. Obviously he was a huge supporter of the sport and a talented writer. In many ways, it is incredible a weekly magazine of the quality of Speedway Star is still going....no doubt his passion for the sport was a huge, huge part of that. His legacy will be the magazine that he saved from ipc's scrapheap and made it survive as an independent title. The Star has been a far better magazine than the sport often deserved. Thank you for that Philip. I often didn't agree with him on here, but it was never personal and we had some good banter along the way. I would fully agree that the Speedway Star was a higher quality magazine than the sport deserved, and I did appreciate his insights into the sport on here.
