Don't forget the fastest lap. Now we've got transponders, every lap for every rider can be recorded.

But it shouldn't count for Poles in Poland - apparently that's unfair...

Yes, I meant 8, semi finalists, they even award points in the semi at the moment for the losers based on the 20 qualifying races

You want to know my question?

Why does every individual meeting these days need a final (and often semi-finals)?

Why can't we just use race points from 20 heats?

lt's all very simple, you see; there are three goals in the current system.

1) Qualify for the semi-finals by finishing in the Top 8.

2) Qualify for the final.

3) Win the final and the GP.

There is absolutely nothing unfair to it - not to the riders, anyway. Everybody knows the rules, and everybody has the same chance...

There is nothing wrong with your analysis except that under the previous system, not just every race counted towards the championship, every point did. It was worth chasing 3rd place, regardless of your potential to qualify for the semis. You could be on 11 or 2, that 3rd place might be important in the final analysis. Suddenly every position in every race is important. We get to see 23 keenly contested races times 4 positions. 92 significant finishing positions in every GP all of which count in the end of year standings.

You think it's totally fair that 6 rounds in an 11 round World Championship are held in one country. In these days of marginal gains, where riders spend thousands of pounds on machinery, hours in the gym honing the body,  special diets, psychology consultants, physios, mechanics just to get the slightest advantage over an opponent but it's fine to hold half the rounds in such familiar territory for a few of the riders.

Even Jason Doyle said he was feeling home sick for his dog (and wife) in the last GP.

I don't disagree with that, but as I asked; is it fair for the guy who finished 6th to score more than the GP winner?

If we dispense with the semis and the final, as you suggested above, that wouldn't happen.

That's a terrible way to describe your wife. :o
