IainB
What's the score with rider numbers? I assume riders can just choose their own regardless of whether anybody else already has that number? I've noticed Craig Cook, Grigori Laguta and Anders Rowe all running

But if two of them found themselves together in a series like the SGP or SEC, one of them would have to change.
Triple.H.
It originates from Motocross numbers i think, some pick their own or choose one around date of birth etc, obviously a crossover in age groups and different countries

jenga
riders numbers come from their early days in motorsport . youth events . i could be wrong , but i think cookie had number 11 in his early days of motocross . then he added an extra 1 to make 111 . i think it is something to do with an event in the family . but not too sure . when my brother was doing mx he had numbers 4, 32 kenny roberts number as he was riding yamaha at the time . there was one other number he used , but i cannot think what it was . i think he rode in four different clubs around the north and sometimes his number was already taken by another rider in his class .. hence the change . ahh , the good old days .  the number 69 or 96 is a good un as it reads the same upside down when you have an off !  Edited June 30, 2021 by jenga

Sings4Speedway
Rider numbers have been rattling around for years and as stated is a hangover from moto x and grasstrack where a rider chooses thier own (unless someone else has nabbed it first). It gained speedway once formula 1 allowed drivers to use thier own numbers rather than allocate down the grid based on last seasons finishing order. The same then came into the GPs with Smolinski and Hancock pushing for individual numbers to help develop a brand e.g CC111 (with the added bonus that there is no questioning the text when someone has Cook written across thier hat)

Triple.H.
Why don't Leicester use letters instead of numbers for their squad and tap into the City's rich Rugby heritage

They may choose any riding number with a maximum of 3 digits provided that it has not previously been used by another SGP Rider over the past 2 seasons, the number cannot start with a 0.
