Witches v wolves 28th June, TV meeting

Recommended Posts

I think some perspective is needed here. Firstly the season was in trouble as soon as Klint was unavailable. However I think its unfair to criticise the management as the changes should ( and I emphasise should) improve things. Clearly things are still mixing and I guess crump was desperate to return but clearly not fit.

The desperate shortage of riders has got to come to a head soon and I can only see one thing and that is one big league again.

As one big league would require more riders, how will that solve "The desperate shortage of riders", unless you are proposing fewer teams UK-wide?

Two options I guess , the first one is import more foreigners once restrictions are lifted or secondly blood our own youngsters ( which could be messy). Failing that the sport falls on its arse cos either no one can be bothered  or make any money out of it.

Haven't watched it,, and don't think I will bother,,, but from a pic I saw,,, there was more or less no one there

Certainly didn't seem to be any social distancing issues...

Seemed to be 20m between people, never mind two...

As often when the sport is on TV, the empty terracing is a very, very poor advert for it...

And with the size of Ipswich's stands, it looks even worse..

On Sunday I saw thousands watching in Wroclaw,, the majority bedecked in club colours, full stands, fans with drums to play along with the fan chants and create atmosphere, and every heat win celebrated like it actually meant something. .

Last night you would have had to have the centre green flag marshalls and medical staff joining in just to keep the world's worst Mexican Wave going...

I think it was quite telling that we had no close ups of "the crowd" as I don't think the producer could find enough together to actually fill a TV screen..

Nah the racing at hyde road was better than NSS

What about the dross served up weekly at Kirky Lane?

Not all clubs are lucky enough to be bailed out by the local council sadly , so you do have a short memory. From what I am told, crowds even at full capacity are hardly holding up enough to keep Belle Vue in action long term either.

The greyhound track was completely different to Hyde road and the NSS. Small track , with wide  tight bends.

I have lots of converted dvds with good racing from the early days at the dog track. When John Perrin let stock cars in , then the track became very variable.... all dependant on how much track work had been done

In the latter part of the dog track’s days , Colin Meredith was brought in to do the track and we went back to a well prepared track with good racing.

There are quite a few British tracks that I rarely go to as they generally speaking are not conducive to giving good  quality racing.

I fear that the problem of lack of riders will be resolved by the reality of far fewer Clubs.

Reading the PR and runes of some Clubs it possibly not being too pessimistic in seeing only 10-12 Clubs going to tapes next season in what would remain of top 2 tiers.

The top 6 in PL look solid enough as they have 95% of the TV money to help them (may be 2 Clubs in East Anglia rather than 3) will Swindon come back to cover any loss we can only hope so.

Of the 12 CL Clubs I would most worry about in a higher League are Berwick, Brummies; Eastbourne; Newcastle, Poole; Plymouth .

I feel Len at Kent in his Speedway Star article is already positioning to go in to a stronger NDL which may include some of those 6 with Mildenhall and possibly IOW but that NDL would be no stronger than in 2019. Do Glasgow want to work with the top 6 and would Leicester risk it again? Can't see Scunthorpe in a higher League either?

That meeting was better than most served up this year.

The camera work / director was poor.

Witches don't seem to know where or how to ride from week to week.  Last night there was an outside line , 1st time this year.

Poor crowd...possibly only season ticket holders and after last night can't see that many wanting to go next time.

Comment from a non speedway fan that watched last night on tv.... " whats with the Witches manager.. doesnt look like he cares and not wants to be there. Totally disinterested,  Looks like it's rubbed off on his riders "

Last nights showing was one which one again raises the question as to why we haven't adopted the Polish 'two-minutes' rule where you actually have to be ready to race at the start line, not ambling round to the start and doing your gardening and ignoring the Start Marshall!

All I can think of is drag the meeting out hoping for more food and drink sales.

No point at Foxhall as the club don't get that revenue...

Or maybe the egg on his face from his early season statement about his team and East Anglia.

The first few home meetings the crowd was at full capacity wasnt it , whats changed since then other than the results , the racing last night was ok the tight scores thoughout kept the interest going i thought.

Ipswich missed a big chance in heat 9 wiith Allen not beating Flint for the expected 5-1, Allen seemed affected by the ht 3 tapes warning and looked as though it was on his mind everytime he gated from then on

Next Monday's meeting at Lynn on Tv will be interesting Cook going back as a witch and Heeps riding against the team hes spent most of his career at and with a point to prove ,has he ever ridden against the witches before ?

Crowd last night really down to it being on TV as much as anything.

The other factors of losing and frustrations may have some toll on the future meetings now though. Will still be attendances that would be the envy of most mind.....

Can't say the chance to win £1000 by paying MORE than would usually for a meeting that could be accessed for free was much of an appeal to me

The track seemed to offer a bit more last night to how it has been so far this season but again the opposition read it better than us

Kevin mentioned last night how tall some riders seem to be these days compared to when he was competing. Think he's probably right, can't think of to many guys that were above average in bygone days.In todays  speedway l suppose Sam Masters must be one of the tallest but that didn't seem to hinder him on last night's showing.
