Spl77
11 hours ago, Speedtiger said: Apparently the money announced are ‘loans’ and maybe the sport/clubs didn’t want to take out loans or they didn’t pass the strict loan criteria. Either way still think its another kick in the teeth for speedway. If this money is a loan then I guess speedway is in no position to pay it back given given the financial state of the sport and lack of income both though the turnstiles and via sponsorship

IainB
No surprise to see the money going to the "toffs" sports of RU and horse racing, they always look after their own despite the propaganda of "levelling up"
moxey63
Perhaps British speedway should tell the govt it has links to the Tory party, has discovered a vaccine for this virus, found a shedfull of PPE (tear-offs), or a ferry company with no actual boats. Cut and paste terms and conditions from a takeaway website. They'll hand over cash like there's no tomorrow. No questions asked, nudge, nudge... wink, wink. The future is going to be electric engines for bikes, like you say that would get tracks into cities again, and with no exhaust fumes, into indoor arenas if possible, although i do realise for regular racing that could be a problem Edited November 20, 2020 by The Third Man

tellboy
Probably not dead yet to get some kind of help. BRITISH Speedway bosses have expressed their disappointment after missing out on government funding to help the sport.A range of disciplines will receive millions to help them through the pandemic but speedway, which lost an entire league season this year, has been left out.Now officials of the British Speedway Promoters Ltd have made contact with government officials and there is renewed hope for the sport.Chairman Rob Godfrey said: “This process was not by application but we have been in dialogue with MPs and our APPG (All-party Parliamentary Group) to try and ensure our sport was represented after learning of the funding through listening to Nigel Huddleston (Sports Minister).“It seems quite unfair and unbalanced when you consider we are classed as an elite sport which prevented us running any Premiership and Championship meetings with crowds and yet we aren’t part of the group of sports which have been awarded funding.“It is also strange that we were awarded a pilot test event by the government, the British Final, to work on the reintroduction of spectators to venues but this time we have been ignored.“However, we have now been told there is some more funding about to become available for other sports and we will go through the appropriate process of applying.“The loss of an entire league season is a shattering blow for the sport. Riders have been hit hard as self employed workers and many have had to find work elsewhere.“Clubs have had no income but there are fixed costs which cannot be avoided in a time like this.“A financial boost for the sport would be most welcome. In the meantime as a group of promoters we are processing our thoughts for next season.”
BartoszZmarzlikFan
No matter what Boris does the 2021 Speedway season has to go ahead otherwise every club will shut down for good. I don't know why British Speedway bosses are listening to him now tbh. They can run a full Speedway season with fans in attendance under social distancing rules if they don't pay attention to Boris. British clubs no longer see big crowds so you can get the same amount of fans in as you would normally get just as long as they're wearing a face mask and standing 2 metres apart. Don’t blame the government, blame the people like Chapman and Godfrey who have run the sport into the ground and squandered and wasted all the ‘rainy day’ money that was there to help in bad times..!
Tinker
That's rather harsh. I think they are doing all they can for speedway at the moment, it can't be easy.
