steve roberts
Does anyone have any memories of Conny Samuelsson? He rode for Oxford in 1969 (before my time) and although looked upon as a failure around Cowley he put in some useful performances at Swindon and Coventry. Shame he was never given another opportunity to shine in Britain but perhaps he felt that his talent was better suited on the ice where, if I remember, he achieved two podium places in World Finals. My brother remembers him at the local Blackbird Leys Fair when he proved a crack shot at the rifle range picking up many prizes...apparently he had just served his Swediish National Service! He would be a good subject in the "Backtrack" or "Classic" magazines.
chunky
I do remember seeing Conny at Plough Lane (just after my seventh birthday). I can't really say just how good (or bad) he was, but I know he didn't pull up any trees. He had a pretty long career, I think...

He achieved double figure scores around Coventry (may have claimed the track record albeit momentarily?) and Swindon but really struggled around Cowley. Continued to ride for many years in Sweden but it's shame that he wasn't given another chance in Britain but as I hinted it may well have been his personal choice? Riding at No 1 in the KOC match at Brandon, he scored 9 + 1 from four rides. He set a new track record of 65.6 in heat 5 (when he beat Gote Nordin), which was equalled by Nigel Boocock two heats later, and then beat Booey after that. He also scored 14 at Cradley in the Midland Cup, and 10 at Swindon in the BL. It's crazy when someone can do that on odd occasions, and not ever look like scoring on most nights... arnieg
Made his Swedish debut for Njudungarna circa 1965 and was still riding for Vetlanda in 1997. A mere 33 years riding for the same team.
