PHILIPRISING
SO sorry to hear that Jerzy Szczakiel, the first Polish rider to win the individual World Championship, has passed at the age of 71 after a short illness. I was at the 1973 World Final in Katowice when Jerzy won although it is invariably remembered as the one that got away from Ivan Mauger. Jerzy never received the recognition that he deserved in his own country. Many is the time that I helped him out with a pass at a SGP event in Poland because the authorities would often ignore him. Decent chap and actually a far better rider that he is too often described as. RIP Jerzy Edited September 1, 2020 by PHILIPRISING
