British sport ratings

The waters muddy a little I guess as to whether the spectator aspect is classed as physical attendees or eyes on the product through TV viewers. The Crucible only holds 900 odd but World Championship Snooker is far more popular than World Championship Speedway in terms of TV viewers I’m sure.

You haven't seen me fishing...entertaining in itself as I swear under my breath attempting to reel in the "Big One" and having it just at landing net distance the blighter breaks the line and scarpers off with hook and float!

Maybe, but fairly irrelevant in this topic, as you could say Formula 1 is one of the least popular sports in the country as only about 3 people participate

I was being flippant in my observation as my endeavors did attract a certain amount of unwanted attention.

It's spectator interest not participant entry. I think a couple of dozen spectators turn up for the British GP. Anyway a GP would IMO come under MOTORSPORT as it's not a sport in its own right.

Sorry, but I fail to see how posting facts is 'targeting you' . Is  what I posted wrong ? If so please point out which part......

This, from 2019, has speedway fifth, which seems a bit optimistic but it's good to see it recognised.

https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/most-popular-sports-in-the-united-kingdom.html

I found another that had Speedway 7th.

Others don't include it at all.

It is the certainly something of a cult sport.

I dont read that as a top ten chart, rather just a list of ten popular sports in the UK.

But speedway would be well down any list. Each year british Moto GP and F1 events get far more British speedway gp. Think in recent years it has out numbered world superbike crowds but that still leaves it as the 3rd biggest motorsport in the country.

...and that's what the thread is about except in one part of mainland Europe by the look of things!

I have provided actual figures and you didn't, so I guess you haven't actually done what the OP asked, and I have. Yet you try and target me. So again, point out what is false with my posts, as it is easy to point out your errors

Where does speedway stand in a possible ratings list of favourite British sports. It would be interesting to see a 'favourite sport table' should one actually exist - and I have an idea one does. My rating for speedway in such a table would be 'a dodgy 15th'!

Is any fellow BSF poster able to produce such a favourite sports table if there is one? Acting on previous Germanic advice in regard to searches I did try Google without any luck.

You seem to have missed the stats provided, but hey ho......

Also just Wimbledon alone

https://www.statista.com/statistics/957232/wimbledon-championships-aggregate-attendance/

But I do remember a similar thread a few years back and it was claimed that Cowes week has around 100,000 but how do you count people just watching from a beach or as with cycling, just standing at the roadside ?

Ice Hockey at least the top league

https://www.eliteleague.co.uk/article/748-attendances-up-over-2019-20-season

Wow..

An average of 3043 fans per league match..

That's around double I would suggest that each top level Speedway meeting would average...

And having been to a match there does appear to be a clear focus on attracting a younger demographic of fans...

Admission costs similar to Speedway too..

This is the official list of sports, taken directly from the "Life in the UK Test" official handbook for all the dodgy foreigners who want to live permanently in the UK and take all our jobs but claim all our benefits too.

Cricket

Football

Rugby

Horse Racing

Golf

Tennis

Water Sports (bit general that)

Motor Sports (and that. I guess that covers speedway although in the notes it's all about F1)

Skiing (Yup. Skiing)

No such sport as rugby. There is rugby league and rugby union.

When speedway was on Sky Sports, in particular on Sky Sports One, as it used to be known, its viewing figures held up with almost all sports bar football.

On the other channels, although viewing figures were lower, it was generally in the top 10 viewed programmes that week, numerous weeks the most watched.

The BSF only appears to recognise rugby - not the fact there are TWO codes. The BSF has done so for years. Take a look through GENERAL DISCUSSIONS if you get a spare moment.

I was forced to play Rugby Union at school...never League...and I bloody well hated it getting pulped by all the fat and/or bully types!

Despite being in a rugby league stronghold, my secondary school forced rugby union on its pupils (thankfully, for only one term each academic year; football being the main sporting activity). Wind forward a few decades, and the retirement of its union-loving Welsh headmaster and a union-playing games teacher, and the school switched - very successfully - to rugby league. It's a crying shame many Britons still believe all 'rugby' has to offer is rugby union.

I was brought up in Oxford and attended a Grammar School therefore League was never going to be an option. It was Rugby and cricket...never football until it went comprehensive!

I went to a grammar school in Surrey, so it was exactly the same for me. In fact, a school friend of mine (he was a couple of years older than me) was Ian Skinner, who captained the England youth team!

The only football we had was the "Pupils vs the Masters" annual challenge...
