steve roberts
Apparently there's a discussion about placing a Blue Plaque on the one-time residence of Ivan Mauger when he was based in Cheshire during his time in Britain? Would be great if it came about and a first for speedway!

nw42
Nice idea, the area has changed a fair bit since Ivan lived there, right opposite his house was British Aerospace Woodford, then known as AVRO, it's now a housing estate, although there is still a visitor centre/museum of sorts dedicated to the former industry giants. Ivan's old house is still there, so a plaque would have a home.

Not sure but apparently it was on teletext (which I no longer have and haven't for many a long year) but the story was featured in the Manchester Evening News and Stockport Council apparently wish to proceed with it and have it placed in Chester Road, Woodford where Ivan once lived before moving to Bramhall which is good news indeed. salty
Story was in the Speedway Star last week. House is in Bramhall, Cheshire under the control of Stockport Council and it says he moved there in 1971 and it was the family's last home before he left to go back initially to New Zealnd in 1987. Says he is the second rider to be honoured in such manner, after Jack Parker in Rugby. However, Harry Weslake also has a plaque in Exeter. The article, by Peter Oakes, says it's a done deal, quoting a council spokesman with a planned unveiling in 2021.

However, according to the Stockport.gov website, it is not his house in Bramhall. As Steve said, it is the one in Chester Rd in Woodford. Looking at different articles, there are some discrepancies - certainly as far as timelines - but the Stockport website lists the exact address.
salty
Address in the Star is quoted as 446, Chester Road, Bramhall.

That's exactly what I mean! 446 Chester Road is the correct address, but it is listed as Woodford. However, I did find one reference to the postcode being "Bramhall South and Woodford". I also found an article stating that Ivan lived in Bramhall for a while, in addition to living in Chester Road.

It's on the border of Woodford & Bramhall but definitely Woodford, it's less than 50 yards from this, https://www.google.com/maps/place/446+Chester+Rd,+Woodford,+Stockport+SK7+1QS/@53.3421522,-2.1614612,3a,75y,183.67h,62.96t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sso0PF5pPonPTdUA6DUACCQ!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!4m5!3m4!1s0x487a4c909023d741:0x5dce23781b502002!8m2!3d53.3421429!4d-2.1630481 Woodford, Bramhall & Hazel Grove where I'm from, all fall within Stockport Borough. I grew up 3 miles from that house, my dad used to work at AVRO and would often see Ivan in his distinctive bike car, Citroen I think. As an aside, George Best lived just around the corner from Ivan, George's house was often likened to a public toilet, also used to often see him in a yellow Lotus. Anyway, great news about the plaque, I'll be swerving by for a look next time I'm over home. Edited June 19, 2020 by nw42

Yes, this is how I got to know about it. We wanted to put up a blue plaque to Vivian Woodward. Essex County Council said we should speak to our local council. We asked them and they said they had no objection as long as the people who currently live in the house were happy about it, which they were as we had already asked them. We went back to Essex County Council and, not only did they approve it, they donated £500 towards its cost!
