mez
Hi, has anybody on here any information you can share on my dad's speedway days. Sadly all my mum's memorabilia has been lost over the years. I know it's a long time ago but it would be wonderful if anybody has any photos/articles they can share. Thanks

tigerowl
McNAUGHTON, Harold A Hastings based garage owner, Harold was a late starter to speedway and made his debut at the Sussex track in 1949 whilst in his late 30s. Despite this belated beginning, he wasted no time in making his mark on the sport, scoring eleven points from four rides on his second appearance for the ‘Saxons’ at home to Yarmouth, and recorded an average of over five and a half points per match in his debut season. This turned out to be the last season at the Pilot Field track and he moved along the south coast to Southampton in 1950 where he performed most creditably in Division Two. He was going so well in 1951 that, when Southampton pulled out of league racing in mid season, he was taken on by New Cross but found that the step up in class was too great and joined Ipswich for the start of 1952. Finishing as the second highest scorer behind Sid Clark, Harold had two productive years at Foxhall Heath and was due to continue his career in Suffolk in 1954. However, on the eve of the season Harold was forced to pull out of the side, reportedly due to a heart complaint and was not seen in the sport again. Guest
I have a recollection that Harold McNaughton rode for England in Division Two tests?

He was included in the England 'C' squad for two tests against Sweden in 1952. He scored 7+1 at Southampton, but didn't ride at Rayleigh. Guest
A neat piece of editing to your original post chunky! Good job my quote remains. 30 minutes ago, chunky said: Question marks for a question, John!!! Now the second activity. Yes indeed question marks for a question. However not for an exclamation which was my intended response. Edited May 2, 2020 by Guest

Yes indeed question marks for a question. However not for an exclamation which was my intended response. Unlike you, I don't get offended by people pointing out that I made a mistake. I can't see why it is a "good job" that your quote remains, unless it is for your own personal satisfaction. I even responded with an attempt at humour, which apparently went over your head the same as the "edit norbold" replies on another thread. "Did Sir Walter ride" is an interrogative statement, whichever way you look at it, therefore a question mark is required. Had you said, "Sir Walter rode", that could have been interpreted either way, and exclamation marks would have been acceptable. BL65
The title of this thread could have been longer as Harold McNaughton also rode for Santry (Dublin), High Beech and Cheshunt (at High Beech). Edited May 2, 2020 by BL65

In more than 50 years as a sub-editor and editor I can still learn. BTW on what trees does rhubarb grow? Sticks of it can prove useful for poking at times!
