I was doing some memorabilia  recently in these boring times and came up with these seven British riders. In what order would all you other forum buffs have these riders in.??  N. Boocock - E.Boocock- Louis- Betts- Ashby- Wilson(Ray) Simmons. Here goes should be interesting.         1.Ray Wilson, 2. Simmons. 3.Louis. 4.E.Boocock 5. N.Boocock 6. Ashby 7. Betts very very difficult you could change your opinion everyday.

Difficult one Sid.

Mine would be - Ray Wilson, Terry Betts, Malcolm Simmons, John Louis, Martin Ashby, Eric Boocock & Nigel Boocock...but then again!

I will go with 1 Ray Wilson, 2 Terry Betts, 3 Malcolm Simmons, 4 Nigel Boocock, 5 John Louis, 6 Martin Ashby, 7 Eric Boocock. No prejudice there as Eric was one of my favourite riders of the era. A very hard task as they were all good (imagine having those 7 available for England nowadays to back up Woffy!).

Ask me the same question tomorrow and I would probably come up with a completely different order!!!

nice topic. Thanks Sidney for setting it up.     :)

As everyone else has said, very difficult to choose between them and I'm also sure I would come up with a different answer tomorrow, but for now, I'll go with:

1. Nigel Boocock (perhaps remembering him from an older era than some here), 2. Malcolm Simmons, 3. Eric Boocock, 4. John Louis, 5. Ray Wilson, 6. Martin Ashby, 7. Terry Betts.

Only one real difference in the order - 1. Nigel Boocock, 2. Malcolm Simmons, 3. Eric Boocock, 4. Ray Wilson, 5. Martin Ashby, 6. Terry Betts, 7. John Louis.

Thats ok Wessex great to hear other people's opinion's  so surprised people pick Ray but gee he was good.My uncle who first took me to speedway told me he was one of the few from 67 onwards who could beat Briggs on merit at the Abbey. Also Sommelier another forum member who i respect immensely has always told me Wilson /Michanek are of a few who could beat a peak Olsen at Wolves.

Feel guilty Norbold like you named Bettsy 7th in the list.Betts was one of my heroes see him maybe once a year what a rider he was everytime the Lynn visited the Abbey to see Terry ride was a treat also he was a massive plus to Michael Lee no jealousy and Michael knows just how good Terry was as a rider and human being.

My pick would be to swap Ray Wilson for Malcolm Simmons Steve. Otherwise I agree with the rest.

Totally right Steve Dag was very good at Wolves.Maybe you can tell me Steve first visited Monmore in the late 70s ( Hans time 78??? the track was so different long straights.Holloway Swindon who i followed did well at the old Monmore nowadays now the track is a real test technically as a rider.

Unfortunately I never got to see Dag at Wolves...but I know it used to irritate Olsen when he beat him! My first visit to Monmore was in 1974 and it always struck me as having too long straights for the tight bends...very much hairpin in shape. I believe that the track was altered at some point but it was never a favourite of mine although Oxford had a good record there during the Nielsen years. Happy to say I was there on the afternoon White City won the league and there were so many "Rebel" fans it was unbelievable! Great days!

Looking through the seven riders only four of those became  British Champion Ashby,Betts,N.Boocock missing out.Being fair to Nigel he was in a real tough era where Briggo, Ivan, P.C dominated the title from 1961/72.

I don't just use the British Final as a guide; I also look at averages/domestic form and World Final appearances. That is why I rate Nigel as highly as I do.
