FAST GATER
Am I the only one who misses the tape touching the starts seemed so much more of a lottery in those days ,nothing like seeing one of the top dogs heading back to the pits after breaking the tapes . I know all the arguements for the rules today but IMO overall the cream always floats to the top and the best riders will win most of the time ,they can either gate or not . I would tend to agree...Ivan Mauger often said that whatever system was in place he would still make most of his starts.

The best three meeting's i saw at White City were White City v Swindon 1977 - 1982 Penhall (scandal meeting!!!) 1983 Incontinental Final .And the best couple of meeting's i saw at Cowley had to be Oxford v Supporters select 1978 ( Shields outstanding ) and Carter's miraculous effort in the British semi final.

On watching the clips, it is obvious that there is no "get ready" as it is all watch the tapes & go.

Grachan can you remember the Swindon v Exeter meeting ?? when Ivan needed to be secretly escorted out of the Abbey under a blanket. This was after he badly brought Kilby down in one race a great meeting incident packed. Yeah. I think so. I remember them both crashing on the pits bend and both tumbling along the track.

Mauger could be ruthless and he was way out of line in this incident, but wherever Ivan rode he put a few hundred on the gate LEGEND.

I do recall one of the great races at Wood Lane...against King's Lynn early in 1977 when on the last lap Kai Niemi rode round Terry Betts on the second bend and under Michael Lee going into the third bend (or it may have been the other way round) to complete a 12point maximum! However I have lots of memories of White City and wouldn't have changed it for the world thanks to an equally enthusiastic father. Between 1976 and 1978 got to witness the best of both worlds. British League speedway at White City and National League at Oxford plus visits to Swindon cheering on the oppostion! Great days!

Niemi was a very underrated rider, i remember Gordon and Kai scoring 40 pts out of a total of 46 for Eastbourne in 1980 Gordon ( 21,) Kai (19.)
