Paisley Start Behind 1976.jpg

There was in the day awee bit controversy about track width at Love Street.

Indeed there was, one nite v Newcastle the away management insisted on a spot of mid-meeting track widening on the home straight.  Ironic given Ian Thomas reccomend the SCB official use his (Thomases) own tape measure to ensure all was a-ok with the Boulevard track on Hull's opening in 1971 ( see my earlier post)  Still, all good fun....

I think the narrowest track I have seen racing at was Romford.

with a concrete wall for a safety fence I seem to remember.

No - I do not think the track is there - that is a very old photograph. At the time of the speedway opening, the larger, much larger (pictured in an earlier post)  grandstand was in place as well as the four floodlight pylons (which are not in the above picture). What might appear to be a track is probably no more than 'chain mowing' lines. Plus, note the absence of cars in the surrounding roads.

Very true but along the home straight said wall was too low so a wood and chicken wire addition was required.

I was there a the first meeting and thought great. Had no idea the venture would be so short- lived.
