Dick Darstadly
Managed to get the bare bones of it up but a lot more things to add and many more photo's which I still have to sort out. This is the address for the time being; http://www.art-in-motion.co.uk Anyone want to contribute anything to the memories section, it would be most welcome. Some riders of that era have agreed to add their thoughts too. EDIT Also, updated gallery section of Peter Craven tribute site with more unpublished photographs. http://freespace.virgin.net/pete.craven/gallery.htm Edited April 22, 2004 by Dick Darstadly

iris123
Great start if it isnt finished Like Norbold`s memory of his first visit, but that was a lame excuse not to visit Plough Lane.I thought in those days the routes for buses went from one side of London to the other and we had the underground in the south surely it reached east london by the 50`s Liked the Ronnie Moore site as well Edited April 23, 2004 by iris123

iris123
Come, come,no buses either .I used to cycle from Merton to Eastbourne and Rye House and Arena Essex.Surely you could have made it from Hackney to Wimbledon Edited April 23, 2004 by iris123
norbold
This is the 1950s we're talking about here! To an East End cockney lad like myself, South London might just as well have been the far side of the Moon!

norbold
I wish I knew. I'm supposed to be writing it jointly with Peter Lipscombe as he has all the material, but he is always too busy. We've got as far as 1932!

He's forever saying a trip on the bus to Epping Forest was like going on holiday, and as for visiting his Grandparents in Swindon, that was like going abroad. I'm glad we live in a smaller world now! norbold
I used to love bus trips out to Epping Forest. On summer sundays the 35B ran to High Beech. Wonderful.....

Know what you mean My mums family came from Walthamstow and it was a real family day out to go there.Just like going to Canvey Island. There would be at least 2 car loads leaving Wandsworth and it seemed to take forever. Tried once to find this gathering at High Beech, ended up walking around Epping Forest but didnt see any speedway supporters
Dick Darstadly
When I was going to Wimbledon from Deptford to deliver Ronnie Moore's flywheels for Ken Brett, who would replace the the crank pin and big end bearings and balance them for Ron. I would get a 202 (near Cold Blow Lane) bus from the end of my Street to New Cross bus station. From there a 53 bus to Kennington Oval, then a tube from there to Tooting Broadway then a walk down Garrat Lane to Plough Lane. Usually, Colin Goody (Met him at the VSRA dinner this year after 40 years. Smashing bloke treated me like a little brother.) would take me home after the meeting, which was very late though. EDIT: Quite a few more photos' to go on NX web site later thanks to Mike Kemp. Edited April 26, 2004 by Dick Darstadly
iris123
British Rail from South Bermondsey to either London Bridge or Clapham and change to the tube would have simplified the journey

iris123
Something that i was thinking about but now back in my thoughts due to events at Armadale. Its reasonable to expect that a fair few of the New Cross crowd were also Millwall fans and given that Millwall have a history of crowd trouble dating back before speedway started. Was just wondering if anyone who went to New Cross or maybe West Ham know if there was crowd trouble recorded or witnessed. My grandad told me he was on a supporters bus that was stoned by Belle Vue fans in the early days so speedway supporters arent the angels we like to think. Genesis
Hey Jim, only pulling your leg fella, as you well know I am very new to this. I respect the fact that so many people still have an interest in the history of the sport and I am just pleased to see so much of the past freely available to people like me. If anything I come across contributes toward that and at the same time brings pleasure to others, that enough for me. I might have one or two more items of interest as well when I can find the time to deal with them! Cheers all.

Never saw any trouble in my time at New Cross or West Ham. Though the crowd at New Cross did boo Ronnie Moore once because he'd made some unkind remarks about Johnnie Hoskins in the Speedway Star! Does that count?
