Swindon Robins 2020

Recommended Posts

Looking at Rowe's scores for Somerset, I reckon that if he were a Pole, a Dane or a Swede everyone would be saying we should snap him up immediately. But, because he is a young British rider, there seems a reluctance to accept him as a signing.

I haven't seen him ride, but on his recent scoring I think he can hold his own at reserve.

He beat Claus Vissing as well when Somerset raced Glasgow.

I was surprised at how well he is doing when I looked.

Especially with a long tail, if Swindon were more solid with a stronger reserve then perhaps the pressure on Rowe would be less but he will need to chip in and pull his weight. Rather than those you have named one hopes it’s the making of him and he can thrive in his role.

Ellis Perks should have been Swindon’s lowest averaged signing for next year.

For all of his effort this year people seem to overlook the fact he scored bugger all points and ended with a 3.57 average.

Rowe has an average two points below Perks in the CL so I expect him to score fewer points next year than Ellis did this year and it won’t help the lad’s confidence. I doubt he’ll average 3. That’s no reflection on him, it’s just a year too early.

How many of those points were from beating the lower reserves though especially in Heat 8?.

People are just raising a concern as so many young lads dropped out in the championship because they weren’t ready last season.

Anders was clearly a better rider than most but that doesn’t mean he’s ready at this moment.

I just hope it works out for all concerned but it’s right to raise the question.

Obviously a lot of them were, because he rode at number 2.

He looks a good prospect.

Going through his last few meetings:

Against Glasgow he beat Craig Cook in heat one and also beat Claus Vissing.

Against Sheffield he beat Danny King (King was off 15m)

Against Newcastle he beat Steve Worrall.

Yes he is still young, and there's no guarantee he can hit good scores in the top league, but on form alone he looks a good signing on a 3 average.

On a 1.6 multiplier Anders Rowe doesn’t look like a good signing on a 3. His 4.38 CL converts to 2.74.

Connor Mountain’s 4.73 converts to 2.96 and he had an even higher average earlier in the season and has an extra year’s experience, having ridden in the CL in 2018.

Anders only went into the Somerset 1-5 when Somerset released three riders and went top heavy.

Having said that, he did do much better than expected in the main body of the team in the final third of the season, raising his average from 3.85 to 4.38.

It was his first full year, and his average is based on his scores over the whole season. His form at the end of the year was a lot better than at the start.

If Connor Mountain had a higher average earlier in the year than at the end then that means he got worse while Rowe improved.

Surely it has to start in the CL though?

They should have a minimum 7 point NL average to be eligible for the CL.

And then a 4.5 CL average before coming into the PL.

Otherwise they’re just rabbits in the headlights, making up the numbers and usually tailed off.

Why? Sweden & Poland do that & it brings their riders on.

Don’t think there’s any evidence of it working in Sweden. Who’s made a breakthrough there since the momentary glimpse of Jonasson five years ago. They still pick Ljung for internationals!

Poland’s a completely different case because it’s a major sport there, there are many more young speedway riders than here and they have far better backing and pay.

But if you don’t allow these lads the opportunities then they will never progress. Let’s not kick him before he’s even completed a race.

Thought you weren't allowed to ride in the PL now until you'd achieved a CL average which converts to a PL 3.00 or more?

Yes, that was supposed to be the case. One of the few good rules sacrificed in some sort of hushed up backroom deal.

Do you think the 15 year old Thompson twins should sign for PL clubs too?

Or are they not ready yet?

That’s my point.

If a club wants to give them a chance then why shouldn’t they give it a go. I genuinely think allowing a young Brit at reserve is a good thing. Why bring in a ringer, look after our own riders first.

Woffy, Lambert, Bewley to name a few we’re all given chances at a young age.

You make a very valid point and I agree it is too soon in his development. Rowe is no doubt a very talented young rider but to throw him in the deep end like this is a big risk for Swindon and the rider.
