Wisbech Speedway

As a avid programme collector, just got a Wisbech programme dated 20/10/1945 Wisbech track championship.

My good friend John Somerville has a Wisbech programme stating the first ever meeting held in a sports stadium, Wisbech v The Rest 18/07/1948.

(Since 1937 various Grass & Dust tracks in fields around Wisbech) No idea of the venue of my programme!

Any info much appreciated

No mention in the publication 'Homes of British Speedway' other than a reference to Wisbech Dirt-Track (1937-39 & 1946-48) but no specific location given.

Many thanks for the info, think this could be a nightmare one to sort out!

The First & only race in the programme was a Midget Car race, some well known names in the programme, ie Stan Dell, Paddy mills etc

The stadium has now been replaced by a Tesco superstore, which has a large mural in the foyer commemorating the history of stock cars at the stadium. I don’t recall speedway ever being staged there.

It's been so long . I could be getting confused with plans in the 80's that came to nothing for a conference league team there                                            /

I cannot find the data at the moment but have a recollection that Wisbech in the mid-1940s JUST MAY have been promoted by riders Ted 'Hoot' Gibson and Wilf Plant. I think both may also have had quasi-promotional interests at the same time with a track at Earls Barton? So far as the second track mentioned is concerned a name that also springs to mind on the promotional side is Eric Irons.

A person who may be able to supply some details is Wilf Plant's son Graham. I do not have any contact for him but if you are on Facebook sommelier he is a member and you may be able to contact him through FB.
